The Pokémon franchise has an intricate set of battling rules that create a majority of its interesting concepts, like Type Advantages. Nonetheless, some of the most skilled trainers and Pokémon ignore these rules in favor of their different strategies. Charizard is a prime example of this concept and regularly battles Pokémon it has a disadvantage against. Moreover, Charizard has been demonstrated to defeat powerful Water-Type Pokémon like Blastoise, more than once.

Due to its iconic status, Charizard regularly partakes in many of the franchise’s most popular battles. Likewise, trainers like Ash outright ignore Type-Advantages a majority of the time. Ash even defeats a Poliwrath once his beloved Pokémon begins to listen to him. Although the fan-favorite Pokémon might have a disadvantage against Water-Types, many aquatic-based Pokémon that Charizard can still defeat.

Golduck’s Stats Are Much Weaker Than Charizard’s

Although Charizard Should Avoid Its Psychic-Type Attacks

Golduck is the evolved form of Psyduck and one of the weaker Water-Type Pokémon Charizard could probably beat. While it doesn’t have the Psychic Type, it can still utilize several Psychic attacks. Yet, Charizard’s superior speed and special attack give it an edge. The famous fire Pokémon can also learn many Flying and Dragon-type attacks to hinder any advantage Golduck might have.

Pokémon Theory: The Real Reason Misty Caught Psyduck

Misty never had a reason to catch Psyduck, much less hang onto it. Despite this, it’s now one of her and the franchise’s most iconic Pokémon.

As long as Charizard can avoid Golduck’s Water-Type attacks, it’s likely to easily secure victory. That being said, Golduck is no pushover. Misty and other trainers have demonstrated that the Psyduck line can be viable in the right conditions. Nonetheless, Charizard does not require specific conditions to unleash his full potential. Since Psyducks evolve at level 33 instead of 36, it can also be assumed that Charizards are more often at a higher level.

Cloyster Has No Resistance to Fire Due to its Dual Typing

Dual Typing Isn’t Always a Good Thing

Cloyster is one of the most well-recognized Water-Type Pokémon from the original 151. It is also one of the first Pokémon to receive a Dual Typing. However, this Dual Typing of water and ice removes its only true advantage against Charizard. Since Cloyster is also an Ice Type, it has no Fire resistance. Therefore, Charizard could easily outmaneuver the aquatic-based Pokémon and hit it with a selective Fire Blast.

Ice-types may not get much time to shine in the anime, but these ten Pokémon make the most of their limited appearances.

Charizard has also been demonstrated, on more than one occasion, to remove all the water from the arena with its extreme heat. If it were to do this against Cloyster, there’s not much else the Water-Type could effectively do. Aside from his fantastic speed, Charizard has one of the strongest Special Attack stats of the early Pokémon. This means that a few good hits from Charizard are likely enough to defeat Cloyster, despite its impressive defense stat.

Ludicolo Is Very Weak to the Flying Type

Charizard Is A Wing Attack Away From Victory

While Charizard primarily attacks using his Fire-Type attacks, he has access to many Flying-Type moves as well. This is a danger to any Pokémon with Grass-Typing, like Ludicolo. Although Ludicolo could potentially damage Charizard with a Water-Type barrage, it’s defenseless against moves like Wing Attack or Air Slash. Brock’s Ludicolo is the only truly notable one in the anime and in no way could it defeat a Charizard.

Ludicolo is primarily used as a support Pokémon, so it can’t stand up to Charizard directly. However, the Pokémon franchise regularly proves that types don’t matter if the trainer is skilled enough. Nonetheless, Ludicolo is still most likely to lose a confrontation with the Flame Pokémon, even without its Flying-Type attacks. Charizard has an extremely diverse attack pool it can choose from, allowing it to always be one step ahead of its opponents.

Ash Defeated a Poliwrath With Charizard Before

Although Ash Initially Loses His Battle With the Water-Type

Even when Ash wasn’t the skilled trainer he has become today, he regularly ignored Pokémon typing. This is extremely prevalent when he challenges Tad’s Poliwrath with Charizard. Although Charizard is initially frozen, he decides to listen to Ash during the rematch. Once Charizard listens to his trainer, they easily overwhelm the Water-Type Pokémon. This just proves how invaluable a loyal Charizard can be.

Ash surprisingly defeats Tad and his Poliwrath, even with the type disadvantage. Moreover, even though Ash didn’t use any, Poliwrath is weak against Flying-Type attacks. This means that trainers without Ash’s skill can take advantage of Poliwrath’s glaring vulnerability. However, Ash’s victory using Charizard begins their superior winning streak in the series. After this moment, Charizard becomes one of Ash’s most dependable Pokémon.

Lapras’s Ice and Water Dual Typing Puts It at a Disadvantage

Charizard Can Easily Maneuver Around the Water Tank

Lapras is one of the most powerful Pokémon from the original 151. However, its lack of mobility options puts it at a disadvantage against Charizard. Although it is extremely fast in the water, it struggles on land. Lapras’s Dual Typing also prevents it from having any protection against Charizard’s destructive moves like the Fire Blast. While Lapras does have a rather robust special defense stat, Charizard’s unusually high special attack would still overwhelm the transport Pokémon.

Overall, Lapras are primarily used in the Pokémon world as a means of transport. There are some notable Lapras that are used for battle. However, even these skilled Lapras probably couldn’t contend with an equally skilled Charizard. While most Pokémon’s skills fluctuate based on their trainer, it is impossible to ignore Charizard’s inherent bonus. In the Pokémon World, Charizard is likely one of the top predators.

Charizard’s Flying-Type Attacks Can Make Quick Work of Golisopod

Golisopod has Bug and Water Dual Typing

Golisopod is one of the most formidable Pokémon to come out of the Alola Region. However, even this Water and Bug-Type Powerhouse would be unable to compete with a furious Charizard. Leon, Red, and Ash have all demonstrated that their Pokémon can defy the odds. Therefore, it’s even worse for Golisopod, who struggles due to his Bug-Typing. Although most trainers focus on Charizard’s Fire, he also has plenty of useful Flying-Type attacks.

The Alolan powerhouse is truly formidable, but its type disadvantage is enough for Charizard to destroy its chances for victory. Moreover, its speed stat is abysmal compared to the Flame Pokémon’s. This means Charizard could fly circles around Golisopod before it could even react. Nevertheless, the battle would still be difficult due to Golisopod’s formidable defenses.

Mega Charizard X’s Water Resistance Could Allow it to Defeat Gyarados

Charizard X’s Dragon Typing Provides It With Water Resistance

Gyarados is often considered one of the stronger Water-Type Pokémon. It also has Charizard’s reputation for losing control relatively often, and they both initially share the Flying-Type. However, they both also have the opportunity to Mega Evolve, which trades their Flying Typing for Dragon. Even if Gyarados chooses to Mega Evolve as well, Charizard is still likely to have the advantage.

Since the Dragon-Typing provides resistance to fire and water and is only weak to itself, the battle would likely be arduous. However, it’s more than likely that Charizard will come out on top. Both Ash and Red’s Charizards have demonstrated the ability to survive Water-Type attacks head-on and continue to fight. This is just a small testament to their overall skill and versatility in battle.

Ash’s Greninja Lost to Alain’s Charizard Even In Its Enhanced Form

This Is One of Ash’s Most Crushing Defeats in the Anime

Charizard and Greninja are some of the most popular Pokémon in history. Therefore, it’s slightly controversial to say that Charizard would most likely beat Greninja in an outright duel. However, the anime has made that fact extremely clear. Despite being in a more powerful and transformed state, Greninja still loses to Alain’s Charizard. This is mostly thanks to Mega Charizard X’s Dragon-Type resistance to Water Attacks.

This resistance makes Mega Charizard X one of the strongest Pokémon in the franchise. However, it can still be conquered by a Water and Fary-Type opponent. That said, Mega Charizard X is likely to overcome most of the Pokémon it struggled against in its base form. This is the primary benefit of Mega Evolution and one of the main reasons that it is only temporary. This is a good thing because it means the Fairy-Type disadvantage could also be removed.

Both Ash and Red Have Defeated Their Rival’s Blastoise With Charizard

Charizard Success in a Battle Depends on the Right Conditions

Both Ash and Red’s rivals utilize Blastoise as their main Pokémon. While this is mostly because they are parodies of the same character, it proves that Charizard can overcome Blastoise consistently. During integral moments in their journey, both Ash and Red utilize their most dependable Pokémon against their rival. Surprisingly, both trainers can defeat their rivals despite the apparent type advantage. Although this is partially a testament to their extreme skill, it speaks equally to Charizard’s power.

A loyal Charizard in the hands of a skilled trainer is likely one of the best tools in Pokémon. Like the Queen piece in the game Chess, it is possible for thousands of combinations. Moreover, most of Blastoise’s firepower is focused directly on attacks that can be easily dodged. It is no wonder Ash and Red can finally defeat their rivals using this Fire-Type behemoth. While Charizard might be shorter than expected, it certainly packs a punch.

Wellspring Mask Ogerpon Is a Legendary Pokémon Charizard Could Beat

Ogerpon Can Alter Its Typing Based On the Mask it Wears

Ogerpon is probably the most impressive Pokémon that Charizard could defeat. However, this is mostly due to its Legendary status. Most Legendary are given superior stats and are typically formidable opponents. Nevertheless, Ogerpon’s half Grass-Typing could be a problem should Charizard choose to Mega Evolve. Once Mega Evolved, there’s nothing the Legendary Pokémon could do against Charizard’s newfound resistance to water.

However, it is one of the few Pokémon capable of beating the fantastic Fire-Type in speed. Yet, speed is not the deciding factor in a battle. There are many other reasons, including Charizard’s superior Special Attack, that it would ultimately win the day. Overall, even Legendary Pokémon can be taken down by this pinnacle of the Fire-Type.
