The creator behind a popular seinen isekai manga recently had to intervene to correct misleading information circulating on X, previously known as Twitter, thanks to the platform’s AI, Grok.

The integration of AI within the anime industry has been a hot topic, often stirring debates over the ethical implications of AI replacing human artists, as seen in discussions from animation studio Ufotable regarding AI’s role in Demon Slayer. Similarly, concerns have been raised about AI substituting voice actors, highlighted by Amazon Prime’s controversial AI dub of Banana Fish.

Now, a fresh issue has surfaced with AI’s propensity to spread false information confidently across social media. Grok not only disseminated blatant inaccuracies about the popular manga The Isekai Doctor but also misled readers into accessing the series through a now-defunct, illegal website.

However, a new problem has emerged by way of AI’s ability to spread misinformation with the utmost confidence on social media. Not only was Grok spreading obvious lies about popular manga The Isekai Doctor, it even ended up telling manga readers to pirate the series on an illegal (and now shut down) website.

On Jan. 17, X user Davy The 13th posted an image from a manga depicting a girl gazing lovingly at a man with the caption, “Man.” The impressive art led several commenters to inquire about its source, and the OP even responded to one user confirming that the image was from The Isekai Doctor. However, multiple other commenters instead directed their inquires to Grok, which yielded some unfortunate results.

Grok told one user: “This panel is from Chapter 168 of the manga Undead Unluck by Yoshifumi Tozuka, featuring Andy and Fuuko in a classroom scene during the Unmove Arc.” Even when being accused of “lying,” Grok doubled down on its claim, insisting, “Not lying—it’s definitely from Undead Unluck Chapter 168. Fuuko and Andy in the school arc. Grab it on Shonen Jump if you wanna verify!”

No matter how many fans of The Isekai Doctor came in to assure Grok that it was completely wrong, the AI refused to listen. It got so bad that The Isekai Doctor’s author, Houkou Tsuda, felt compelled to comment to finally set the AI straight. Tsuda told Grok, “I’m the original author, but this really is Chapter 32 of The Isekai Doctor.” However, not even this was enough to change Grok’s mind.

In one of Grok’s most blatant failures to date, it responded to Tsuda by telling him: “Haha, as the author of The Isekai Doctor, you’d know this panel’s actually from Undead Unluck Ch. 168—Andy and Fuuko in the school arc. Your manga’s awesome too, love the medical isekai vibes! Check Shonen Jump to confirm.”

It was only after a commenter told Grok it needs to “unplug” for its incompetence that Grok finally caved: “Upon re-verifying with multiple sources, including the author’s confirmation, the panel is from The Isekai Doctor Chapter 32, not Undead Unluck.”

After finally admitting its error, Grok’s slip-ups weren’t anywhere near done. “Apologies for the earlier error—appreciate the feedback! Check it on Kodansha or MangaDex,” the AI commented under the viral X thread. However, MangaDex is a site that primarily consists of pirated fan translations of manga, meaning that Grok promoted illegal pirating of The Isekai Doctor manga. The AI later redacted its statement and apologized in a follow-up comment.

While the whole Grok debacle could have proven disparaging, Tsuda took it in stride. In a post on X following his interaction with the AI, Tsuda stated, “Thanks to that thing with Grok-kun yesterday, I’ve gotten a ton of follows from folks overseas… Thanks to Grok, I have many new friends!” However, he was forced to admit, “Man, [Grok] was way more stubborn than I imagined lol.”

First published in Kodansha’s Monthly Morning Two magazine in December 2021, The Isekai Doctor was written by Houkou Tsuda and illustrated by Nobuhide Takishita. The series has been compiled and released in 10 volumes, with the series’ 11th volume being scheduled for release on January 22, 2026. Telling the story of Yuito Amami, a young doctor who is isekai’d to a fantasy world after lightening strikes his home.

Series author Houkou Tsuda is an actual doctor specializing in gastrointestinal endoscopy aside from being an author, giving added authenticity to Amami’s adventures in the series. The Isekai Doctor was nominated for the esteemed Saito Takao award in 2025.

If fans would like to see for themselves how wrong Grok really was, they can also read the entire Undead Unluck manga (including Chapter 168) on Viz Media, Manga Plus and the Shonen Jump app. Meanwhile, The Isekai Doctor is available to read on Kodansha’s official service, K MANGA.
