Arthur Jones, a former defensive lineman for the Baltimore Ravens, Indianapolis Colts and Washington Commanders, died on Friday, October 3 at the age of 39.
Jones played seven seasons in the NFL, from 2010-2017, and won Super Bowl XLVII with the Ravens in 2013.
The cause of death is unknown as of Saturday, October 4. According to Syracuse.com, fire and ambulance crews were dispatched to his home in Pompey, NY after his defibrillator went off.
“We are terribly saddened to learn of Arthur Jones’ sudden passing,” Ravens general manager, Eric DeCosta, said in a statement. “Arthur’s presence was a gift to everyone he encountered. His big, bright smile, infectious energy and eternal positivity created a presence that continuously uplifted others. He was kind, courteous and enthusiastic — always displaying a love for family, teammates and friends.”
Ravens head coach, John Harbaugh, said his “heart was heavy” in his own statement.
“Art was truly a remarkable person,” added Harbaugh, who was Jones’ head coach for all three of his seasons in Baltimore. A dedicated teammate, a relentless worker, and someone any coach would be proud to lead. His love for life, generous spirit, and radiant smile left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.”
Harbaugh continued, “He had a genuine gift for connecting with people, bringing joy to the locker room and beyond, and his presence was a source of light within our team and the Baltimore community. Art’s positive energy and infectious enthusiasm made him a beloved part of our organization. My deepest sympathies and prayers are with Art’s family. May his legacy of kindness live on, and may he rest in peace.”
Jones was the older brother of former UFC Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones and former defensive end Chandler Jones, who was a four-time Pro Bowler and won a Super Bowl with the New England Patriots.
Many in the sports community reacted to Jones’s death on social media, including his former Ravens teammate Torey Smith and MMA fighter Conor McGregor.
“RIP to my brother Arthur Jones,” Smith posted via X on Saturday October 4. “Yesterday was shocking and another reminder that life is short. We lost a great man and father.”
Smith and Jones were teammates on the Super Bowl XLVII championship Ravens team.
“Very sad to hear this news, Arthur was a great man, a friendly giant!” McGregor said in a post via X on Friday October 3. “God speed Arthur Jones.”
Former NFL defensive back Darius Butler, who played with Jones on the Colts in 2016, also posted his condolences on social media.
“Rest in peace big fella! I’m going to miss our random check ins and laughs about who knows what,” Butler said via X on Friday October 3. “Arthur Jones you will be MISSED.”
Jones, born in Rochester, NY, played college football at Syracuse University.
He was drafted by the Ravens in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL Draft. He played in 64 NFL games throughout his career, recording 99 tackles, two forced fumbles and 10 sacks, including a sack in Super Bowl XLVII with the Ravens.
