Keeping Her Personal Life Private
Aubrey Plaza was with Jeff Baena for 14 years before his death in January 2025. In earlier interviews, the actor had spoken about what it was like to build a life while facing constant public attention.
“Celebrity and fame and all that stuff is scary to me,” she told Harper’s Bazaar in 2021. She added that her instinct was to use humor to cope, saying she tries to “find the funny in it, even if I come out looking weird.”

That visibility also meant Plaza occasionally had to speak about deeply personal experiences, including the grief she faced after Baena died by suicide. The pair had privately separated after being married for more than three years.
While appearing on Good Hang, the podcast hosted by Amy Poehler, in August 2025, Plaza likened the experience of grief to the horror film The Gorge. She described an overwhelming sense of pain that remained close at all times: “There’s like a giant ocean of, just, awfulness that’s right there and I can see it, and sometimes I just want to dive into it, and just like be in it.”
Plaza said her relationship with that pain changes from moment to moment. “And then sometimes I just look at it,” she explained. “And then sometimes, I’m just trying to get away from it. But it’s always there. It’s just always there.”
