Ayodele Fayose, Chairman of the Rural Electrification Agency, has highlighted a significant link between Nigeria’s surging population and the country’s chronic electricity shortages. He emphasizes that inadequate power supply significantly influences how Nigerians spend their evenings.
Discussing the urgent need to tackle the electricity crisis, the former Ekiti governor pointed out that the absence of reliable power forces many Nigerians to remain indoors after sunset, thus restricting nightlife and outdoor leisure activities.
Fayose noted that with limited entertainment options available at night, many individuals might find themselves spending more time with their spouses, a situation he believes contributes to Nigeria’s escalating population.
He also argued that enhancing electricity supply would pave the way for a more vibrant nightlife and boost business and recreational pursuits, offering Nigerians alternatives beyond staying inside their homes.
“We need to address this electricity issue in Nigeria. At that level, the people have no other attractions. Nothing else attracts them after seven o’clock. Darkness falls, and everyone engages with their spouses, leading to a population boom.”
The simple problem is because there’s lack of electricity. People go to bed early. Their mind is simply prepared that, well, if this is the only available recreation, let me remain here. But when we address this electricity, there will be nightlife. There will be recreation outside your wife,” he said.
The remarks have also renewed conversations about the need for reliable electricity and better recreational opportunities across Nigeria.
