While Ben Affleck has said he doesn’t like too much public attention, he agreed to appear in Jennifer Lopez’s film The Greatest Love Story Never Told. The documentary follows Lopez as she prepares to release an album and the film This Is Me…Now. It also features Affleck, her husband at the time. After their divorce, Affleck revealed why he agreed to appear in the documentary and what he thought about it.

Affleck, like others in Lopez’s life, had reservations about The Greatest Love Story Never Told. Still, he agreed to appear in it because he felt it was generally a good idea. While he doesn’t like revealing too much about himself, he said he wanted to be “honest” in the film.

“I thought it was an interesting examination,” he told GQ in 2025. “Like I mentioned to you before, there are a lot of people who I think have handled celebrity more adeptly and more adroitly than I have, Jennifer among them. My temperament is to be a little bit more reserved and private than hers. As happens in relationships, you don’t always have the same attitude towards these things. And so I thought, Oh, this is interesting because how do you reconcile that?”

He also felt it was unfair for him to avoid attention when Lopez embraced it.

“I love and support this person. I believe in them. They’re great. I want people to see that,” he said. “And I think the thing that I said in that documentary or the piece that they used was where I said, You don’t marry a ship captain and then say, ‘Well, I don’t like going out in the water.’ You’ve got to own what you knew going into any relationship.”

In the documentary, Lopez goes through some love letters Affleck wrote her, which seems to make him uneasy. He noted that because she was providing a window into their relationship, the title of the film doesn’t make much sense.

“I did really find the beauty and the poetry and the irony in the fact that it’s the greatest love story never told,” he said. “If you’re making a record about it, that seems kind of like telling it.”

He said he had to work to get comfortable with putting so much of his personal life in front of the camera.

“Things that are private I always felt are sacred and special because, in part, they’re private,” he said. “So this was something of an adjustment for me.”

She believed her ex-husband was too guarded

Lopez likes attention more than Affleck does. When they were still together, she told him he’d become too guarded.

“I don’t know if there’s anybody who understands Instagram better than her,” Affleck told The Hollywood Reporter. “In fact, she gave me a talk this morning before this interview. She thinks that because of experiences I’ve had, I’ve become very guarded. And she’s right. I view these things as land mines, where if you say one wrong thing, your career might be over.”

While he said it was hard for him to open up, he acknowledged that Lopez was right to tell him to relax.
