Here’s what Bill Belichick has said about his televised interview and why his girlfriend interrupted it.

After Bill Belichick’s TV interview went viral over a question about his relationship with his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill head football coach has broken his silence about the whole thing.

During an appearance on CBS Sunday Mornings with journalist Tony Dokoupil on April 27 to promote his book The Art of Winning: Lessons from My Life in Football, Belichick was asked how he met his girlfriend, who is 49 years his junior. Hudson, who who watching the interview off camera, immediately shut down that question telling Dokoupil: “We’re not talking about this.”

Days later, Hudson took to Instagram and shared a screenshot of an email from Belichick seemingly to his camp, accompanied by the Taylor Swift song “Look What You Made Me Do.” Following some confusion about that, Belichick decided to set the record straight.

The new Tar Heels said in a statement through the university (per CNN): “I was surprised when unrelated topics were introduced, and I repeatedly expressed to the reporter, Tony Dokoupil, and the producers that I preferred to keep that conversation centered on the book. After this occurred several times, Jordon, with whom I share both a personal and professional relationship, stepped in to reiterate that point to help refocus the discussion.”

He added: “The final eight-minute segment does not reflect the productive 35-minute conversation we had, which covered a wide range of topics related to my career. Instead, it presents selectively edited clips and stills from just a few minutes of the interview to suggest a false narrative — that Jordon was attempting to control the conversation — which is simply not true.”

CBS responded to Belichick’s statement saying that it was agreed upon to be “wide-ranging” which “was confirmed repeatedly with his publisher before the interview took place.”
