Each season of Netflix’s hit series Bridgerton brings to life a pivotal scene from the beloved book series that fans eagerly anticipate. Previous highlights include Daphne’s (Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon’s (Regé-Jean Page) intimate wedding night, Kate (Simone Ashley) and Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) engaging in a spirited croquet match, and a memorable moment between Colin (Luke Newton) and Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) involving a mirror.

Season 4, Part 1 of Bridgerton doesn’t disappoint, capturing yet another iconic scene from the books: the lake encounter. Here, Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha) unexpectedly comes across Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) enjoying a nude swim at My Cottage’s lake.

Note: Spoilers ahead for Bridgerton Season 4 Part 1, now available on Netflix.

This season delves into the romantic journey of Benedict Bridgerton, known as the most notorious bachelor in the Ton, as he unexpectedly finds love. Initially embracing a libertine lifestyle filled with various romantic escapades, Benedict’s world is turned upside down at his mother’s masquerade ball when he becomes enchanted by a mysterious “Lady in Silver.”

Unknown to Benedict, this captivating lady is actually Sophie Baek, a maid with a complex past. Sophie is the illegitimate child of a nobleman and his mistress. Following her father’s death, Sophie is left with nothing and forced to depend on her cruel stepmother, Lady Araminta Gun (Katie Leung), who insists that Sophie’s only future lies in servitude within her own family.

When Araminta discovers that Sophie snuck into a society event, she kicks the girl out. Sophie finds herself working for the vile Cavenders in the country. When Benedict hurts himself coming to the poor maid’s rescue one night, the two soon find themselves in close quarters, without the camouflage of their masks. As a flirtation develops between the dashing gentleman and lowly maid, the rules of propriety and the conventions of society only ratchet up the sexual tension… Crescendoing with the lake scene.

In Bridgerton Season 4 Episode 3 “The Field Next to the Other Road,” Sophie takes a walk on the grounds outside Benedict’s cottage, only to catch a glimpse of her beloved swimming au natural in the great outdoors.

“I was chilled to the bone. It was very, very, very cold,” Luke Thompson told DECIDER last month. “But kind of fun.”

“I think so much of filming can be so technical and — but I’m not saying this in a bad way — artificial. So to actually have a bit where it’s like, ‘Okay, go and jump in that lake,’ is very literal and you do actually have to do it,” Thompson said.

When Benedict realizes that he’s being watched, he very boldly gets out of the water and demands whoever is spying on him show their face. He’s only just gotten his trousers back on when Sophie reveals herself to his delight.

What might delight some corners of the Bridgerton fanbase is the very deliberate way the show’s costume designers cut the waistline of Benedict’s trousers. They remain half buttoned, revealing a very toned body that’s been hiding under the character’s proper Regency dress.

According to Thompson, he had nothing to do with the technical side of getting this look right.

“The wonderful thing about an actor is that you get to sort of leave it,” he said. “That’s a costume issue. They do what they want to do and and I follow suit.”

“But that whole aspect is great. It’s fun because it’s a huge part of the show and it’s a huge part of what people love about Bridgerton,” Thompson said. “You know, it’s silly to sort of deny that element. Yeah, it’s huge.”

Once he is more formally attired, Benedict begins teasing Sophie. The two grow closer together while bantering until it’s clear they want to kiss. Finally, they do. It’s sweet, tender, and very sexy. And very Benedict.

“To be able to both step into those shoes in that kind of game, but also try and make it real and true to the character of Benedict, as well, and not sort of suddenly become this sort of like ‘idea of a romantic hero,’ that’s been part of the fun of playing this character for this season,” Thompson said.

And it’s been the fun of watching Bridgerton this season, too.
