Unlike most athletes who relish the communal atmosphere of the Olympic Village, Team Canada’s men’s hockey team has chosen a different path for the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Games.
In a strategic move, the team, led by goaltender Logan Thompson, has opted for a hotel stay to enhance their focus and performance. “Our decision isn’t meant as a slight,” Thompson shared with SportsNet on February 9. “We are driven to secure the gold medal and believe this choice gives us the best shot at achieving that.”
The men’s hockey roster boasts notable NHL talents such as Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid. Their campaign kicks off on February 12 against Team Czechia. Meanwhile, the Canadian women’s team tasted victory against the Czech Republic earlier in the week but faced a setback with a loss to Team USA on February 10. The women’s team is set to play Finland on February 12, a game postponed due to a norovirus outbreak affecting the Finnish squad.
The men’s ice hockey team—which includes NFL stars Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid and more—will start their competition run on Feb. 12, where they’ll face off against Team Czechia. Meanwhile, the women’s team won their first game against the Czech Republic earlier this week, but was defeated by Team USA on Feb. 10.(The latter team will also compete against Finland in their final group stage game Feb. 12 after a delay due to the Finnish team’s norovirus battle.)
Though Team Canada have found more comfort in a hotel, they haven’t completely walked away from the Olympic Village experience. They reportedly stayed in the village—whose accommodations are styled like dorm rooms—for the first few nights in Milan, but ultimately decided a hotel would better accommodate their needs.
