Sydney Sweeney recently broke her silence on the uproar surrounding her American Eagle jeans advertisement, but her remarks left many feeling unsatisfied, including some of her fellow celebrities. The actress has faced criticism for steering clear of a direct response to questions regarding white supremacy.

A recent Sydney Sweeney interview has sparked backlash

During a conversation with GQ, Sweeney addressed the American Eagle campaign, which featured the tagline “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.” This catchphrase cleverly played on the similarity between the words “jeans” and “genes.” However, some social media users found the humor distasteful, particularly since it involved a blonde, blue-eyed white woman. As the controversy intensified, Sweeney unexpectedly gained support from several conservative commentators.

Stoeffel asked, “Is there something that you want to say about the ad itself? The criticism of the content was basically that, maybe specifically in this political climate, white people shouldn’t joke about genetic superiority.”

Sweeney, however, chose not to offer any comments on the matter.

Sweeney declined to comment, though.

“I think that when I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear,” she said.

A number of celebrities have called out Sydney Sweeney after the interview

Sweeney’s response drew renewed criticism, with many saying that her refusal to disavow white supremacy was an answer in itself. Even Sweeney’s peers have joined in on the criticism. Fellow White Lotus star Aimee Lou Wood commented a vomiting emoji on a clip of the GQ interview.

Content creator Jupiter Baal recently shared a video on Instagram, writing in the caption, “#sidneysweeney isn’t innocent. She is a willing participant on the in joke of #eugenics at a time in which the #farright is thriving on that propaganda.”

Christina Ricci, SZA, and Wood all liked the post. Actor Dan Stevens also shared a post to his Instagram account about Sweeney.

“Sydney Sween’s GQ interview is a reminder that ‘not having a stance’ on white supremacy is 100% having a stance on white supremacy,” it read.

After the extremely limited success of Sweeney’s latest film, Christy, Ruby Rose and Jon Stewart addressed her bad press. Rose was originally attached to the film in the role of lesbian boxer Christy Martin.

“None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us,” Rose wrote in a scathing post on Threads. “You’re a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.” 

Stewart poked fun at the box office failure on The Daily Show.

“The new Sydney Sweeney movie, box office bupkis,” he said. “Apparently, her new MAGA fan base didn’t show up in droves to see a biopic about a lesbian professional boxer who overcomes domestic violence to live her truth. Who could have seen that coming?”

Christy made just $1.3 million in North America in its first weekend, making it one of the worst openings of all time. Sweeney addressed the disappointing numbers in an Instagram post.

“If Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded,” she wrote. “So yes I’m proud. Why? Because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact.”

The film has received mixed reviews from critics.
