Even though their marriage is over, Chance The Rapper and his ex-wife Kirsten Corley are proving that family still comes first.

The 32-year-old artist, born Chancellor Johnathan Bennett, stopped by CBS Mornings to promote his long-awaited sophomore album, Star Line. During the sit-down, Gayle King asked how things have been between him and Corley since their split.

“She’s good. Hey Kirsten! And hey, Kensli and Marli,” Chance said with a smile, giving a warm shoutout to his ex and their daughters, 9-year-old Kensli and 5-year-old Marli. “You know, family is one of the biggest things for me, for her, for my kids, for my mom and dad. So I think the most important thing for anybody that’s having to navigate that is making sure you keep an environment for the kids where they understand that’s the priority.”

Chance and Kirsten’s story began when they met as kids. Years later, they reconnected at the 2012 South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas, and started dating the following year. In 2018, Chance proposed on the Fourth of July, and by March 2019, they were married at The Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Beach, California.

Throughout their relationship, the couple kept their romance largely private, only offering glimpses into their love for one another in rare public moments. That mutual respect seems to have carried into their post-divorce dynamic.

Chance The Rapper’s new album includes the track “Space and Time,” a song born from his breakup with Corley. When King asked about its meaning, the artist explained, “I think it’s a very personal song about, you know, what we were just talking about, navigating that relationship with the mother of my children.

The rapper also tells King that he approached the song like a storyteller. “I love to build a larger story. So it kind of reads as like an epic like The Odyssey or anybody that’s like a seafaring or adventurous character in a book. They go out on the search for some sort of success or thing that they value and then they find that the thing that they value the most they might have left at home.”

Ultimately, the song reflects on love, growth, and letting go. It’s about “just coming to terms with the fact that sometimes it’s best if you love somebody the most, you let them go and you let them grow.”

The couple finalized their divorce in January without revealing the reasons behind it. Instead of public drama, they’ve chosen a path rooted in peace, ensuring that their daughters know they are loved and supported.

From lifelong friends to partners, and now co-parents, Chance and Kirsten are showing that sometimes the strongest relationships are the ones that evolve.
