The City of Chicago has sued the Donald Trump’s administration over an executive order that aims to withhold federal funds from sanctuary cities.
The lawsuit, filed on July 9, 2025, in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, challenges Executive Order 14,159 and actions taken by the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security.
Meanwhile, a federal court has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from implementing the executive order, ruling in favor of cities and countries.
Chicago’s corporation counsel emphasizes that the lawsuit aims to protect the city’s residents and ensure they receive the support they need.
This lawsuit challenges the Trump administration’s directive to pause federal funding, arguing it violates the Administrative Procedure Act and the First Amendment.
