Craig Melvin enjoyed a memorable “Bring Your Kids to Work Day” on Thursday, April 23, as he welcomed a very special guest to the Today show.

The co-anchor was joined by his 12-year-old son, Delano, during the morning broadcast. Seated alongside Al Roker and Dylan Dreyer, Delano got a taste of the action during the 3rd Hour roundtable discussion.

“Delano woke up very early this morning,” Melvin commented with a smile as his son made his on-air appearance, rolling into the segment on a chair.

Though Delano quickly adapted to the studio environment, Melvin had to gently intervene when his son began spinning in his chair, reminding him to focus on the cameras.

“No, son, the cameras,” Melvin advised, repositioning his chair. “You’ve got to pay attention.”

“No, son, you’ve got to… the cameras,” Melvin said, adjusting his chair. “You’ve got to pay attention.”

Roker jumped in with a quick response, telling Melvin, “He’s just doing what you do,” which got a laugh from the table.

Later, Delano got the chance to read from the prompter and help announce the winners of a pet naming contest.

Delano went on to read out one of the winning names, a cat called “Cheddar Big Booty Cheeseburger,” which led to another joke from Roker.

“That’s what we call your dad!”

Melvin laughed it off, telling his son, “Don’t encourage Mr. Roker.”

Delano then shared that he came up with the name for the family dog, Miles. “Miles Garrett was a good football player at the time, so I decided to name him Miles Garrett,” he explained.

When asked what he planned to do with the rest of his day off, Delano paused before answering, “Uhhhh,” which led Melvin to respond, “Great, we missed school for this.”

Delano wrapped up his appearance by reading a tease about tips for getting “your dad to raise your allowance,” but Melvin quickly shut that idea down.

“That’s not happening,” he said, before giving his son a high-five.

Melvin shares Delano and his younger sister, Sybil, with his wife, Lindsay Czarniak.
