The third season of Netflix’s hugely successful series America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders introduced viewers to vibrant new talents such as Faith Ward, Emily Aubrey, and Parker Kilpatrick. While the newcomers captivated audiences, the show also highlighted the enduring journeys of returning members like Kleine Powell, Megan Mcelaney, and Anna Kate Sundvold. These remarkable women shared their experiences and challenges, hoping to inspire and connect with fans.
One cheerleader who has particularly captured the hearts of Netflix audiences and beyond is Reece Weaver. The 24-year-old from Florida quickly became a standout star thanks to her vibrant personality, kindness, and strong faith in Christ. Married to Will Altman, whom she met at the University of Alabama, Weaver faced a turning point this season. She candidly discussed the pressures of her public role, the physical demands of being a DCC member, the effects of social media, and her commitment to being a dedicated wife.
In a move that surprised few, Weaver announced her retirement from the squad in the season’s finale, after three impactful years. During her emotional exit interview with DCC Director Kelli Finglass and Head Choreographer Judy Trammell, Weaver shared her heartfelt reasons. “This is a difficult day, but I believe it’s time to turn a new page. I’m emotional because of how truly grateful I am. You all trusted me with this role, and it surpassed my dreams,” she expressed tearfully.
After placing her uniform back on the rack, Weaver embraced Finglass and Trammell. “You’ve done an outstanding job and will certainly be missed,” Trammell told Weaver warmly. “Thank you, that’s a tremendous honor,” Weaver responded. Once Weaver exited, Finglass acknowledged her absence from next year’s roster with a heavy heart. “Reece is one of those you struggle to let go,” noted Finglass. “She’s made tremendous life changes and comprehends their significance,” Trammell added. “And I value that deeply. Her gratitude is palpable,” Finglass concluded with genuine emotion.
Weaver’s departure was a poignant moment for many, including her friend Charly Barby. Barby first tried out alongside Weaver in 2023 but didn’t make the team until 2024. Despite this, she maintained a close bond with Weaver throughout the process. Speaking with DECIDER over Zoom, Barby shared that she stood by Weaver through “every aspect of her decision” to retire.
“Every part of my journey through DCC has been with her,” said Barby, noting it was “hard” to think of continuing on without her. “She’s just been the most incredible role model.” However, Barby knows Weaver is destined for great things and has “many goals” she wants to achieve.
“I literally get chills talking about Reece because I’m so proud of her,” said Barby. “She’s one of the most inspirational people I’ve ever met.” As Weaver enters her next path in life, Barby confirms that Reece will always have her fellow cheerleaders on the sidelines for support. “I’m excited to watch her grow her wings and fly, but I know she’ll always come back to us because that’s just who she is.”
