Devon Sawa Would Love to Explore Film Genres Outside of Horror

Actor Devon Sawa became a film star after starring in the franchise that wouldn’t die Final Destination. Since then, he’s lived up to his reputation as a horror movie icon. But although the genre has been good to him, Sawa wasn’t opposed to adding more versatility to his successful career.

Sawa isn’t just a horror icon. The Chucky star is also a fan of the genre, which he’s been even longer than he’s been an actor. His passion for horror started when he was just a kid browsing his local video store for movies.

“When I was a young fella in the ’80s, I had a ABC video card in Canada, so ABC video would let me and my friends rent whatever we wanted at a very very early age – I’m talking six or seven years old, we were renting things like Elm Street, Pumpkinhead – you name it, we were renting it as soon as we could. Horror was always in my life, I was always watching horror, I’ve always been a huge fan,” he once said in an interview with Rue Morgue.

His horror credentials didn’t just stop at Final Destination. Other spooky projects he’s done over the years are Idle Hands, The Fanatic, the television series Chucky and the slasher flick Idle Hands. However, Sawa would also be interested in stepping outside of the genre if the opportunity presented itself. He told People not too long ago that a romcom is one type of movie that he wouldn’t mind doing.

“I love horror, but I’m all about exploring everything,” Sawa said.

He named the Tom Hanks comedy Sleepless in Seattle as a reference for the types of comedies he’d be interested in doing.

“I think it would be so much fun,” he said.

Devon Sawa left Hollywood for five years after being burned out from horror movies

Sawa’s stint in Final Destination led to many film opportunities coming his way. But there came a point where the amount of movies he was doing all at once grew overwhelming. Eventually, he decided to take a long break from acting when he was still at a very young age.

“At 25 years old I stepped away from the business for five years and most of the time didn’t know whether I was going to come back or not,” Sawa once said in an interview with Us Weekly. “I had done a series of four or five indie movies that I wasn’t necessarily proud of. Some were horror movies. After Final Destination everybody wanted me to do horror movies and some weren’t as good as others. I was just burnt out.”

Sawa, however, would receive an unexpected movie offer during his hiatus that lured him back to the film industry.

“I was brought back into the business by accident. Somebody at my agency didn’t get the memo that I quit and sent me an audition and I put myself on tape and that was it,” he said. “I didn’t get it. It was for the Max Payne movie with Mark Wahlberg. But I did really well and the casting director wanted to meet me and I did. I thought, ‘You know what, this is what I love. This is what I really want to do.’ So I don’t know why I stepped away in the first place.”

“I think if somebody hadn’t had sent me that audition I think that I may still be out of it. I was happy what I was doing but I’m happier now. I’m happier back doing what I really love,” Sawa added.

Horror movie star Devon Sawa revealed he was interested in doing movies that were similar in tone to this 1993 Tom Hanks classic.
