ABC News correspondent Roberts isn’t one for idle chatter. “I don’t enjoy the casual check-in,” she admitted. “If you’re calling just to say, ‘What’s up?’ then no, I’m not a fan.” On the other hand, her husband, the beloved TV weatherman, enjoys phone conversations. After years of being irked by his frequent calls, a friend’s suggestion shifted her perspective.
“A friend told me, ‘Have you considered that maybe he just feels at ease when he hears your voice, because it reassures him that everything is okay?'” she shared. “I thought, ‘That’s really sweet. I hadn’t considered it that way. If it means something to him, then it should also be important to me.'”
Now, she has adapted her approach. “I’ve learned to take a moment and say, ‘Sweetie, I’ve got a lot going on, but what’s up with you? Great to hear from you. I’ve got to run, talk soon. Love you.’ Those few words mean the world to him, and it only takes me a couple of minutes to be kind,” she said. They marked their 29th wedding anniversary in September 2024.
