Did King Charles Say Princess Diana Would Be Forgotten?

Has Prince Harry Spoken to King Charles III Since Move Back to the U.K.? The Truth

King Charles is allowing Charles Spencer to tell his side of the story, even when that account offers an unflattering portrayal.

A palace spokesperson has responded after an excerpt from Spencer’s forthcoming book, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, claimed the King told Princess Diana’s brother during an angry exchange that the public would eventually “forget” her.

“While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason,” the palace said in a statement to E! News. “Affect judgment and color memory in ways others do not recognize, even many years after such a loss.”

The excerpt from Spencer’s memoir, published by the Daily Mail on Sept. 16, describes an intense phone conversation between Diana’s brother and Charles in the period shortly after her death on Aug. 31, 1997.

“Prince Charles continued his stream of anger, without me interrupting. Then he stopped,” Spencer wrote. “I assumed the pause signaled an effort to bring himself under control, but then he unleashed down the phone what I have always taken to be his pent-up contempt for Diana, and his horror that the world was so bowled over by her death.”
