Halle Berry’s decision regarding the godmother for her children is both heartfelt and unexpected, revealing the profound influence of a special figure in her life.
In a candid conversation with The Cut, the renowned actress disclosed that the godmother of her two children is none other than her former teacher, a choice that reflects a deep, enduring connection.
Berry recounted her formative years, highlighting Yvonne Sims, a teacher who played a pivotal role during her childhood. “She was one of the only two Black teachers at the school,” Berry noted, emphasizing Sims’ impactful presence. “Yvonne helped me grasp early on that life doesn’t just happen to you; it happens with you.”
This profound insight has remained a guiding principle for Berry throughout her life.
“Taking responsibility for your actions is crucial,” she elaborated. “If you don’t acknowledge your role, you’re bound to repeat the same mistakes until you learn.”
Berry shares Nahla ,17, with former partner Gabriel Aubry and Maceo-Robert,12, with ex-husband Olivier Martinez.
During a June appearance on Today with Jenna & Friends, she talked about how her daughter is preparing for a college summer program ahead of senior year.
“She’s 17. She’s going to a college summer program, the college that she’s hoping to go to next year,” she said. “She’s going away this year to the college summer program.”
And the mom of two can’t wait for Nahla’s next chapter.
“I’m not one of these moms that feels like, ‘Oh, she’s leaving.’ Yes, will I worry? Of course,” she continued. “But am I excited for her to start her life and figure out who she’s gonna be? Absolutely. I’m dying to see who she’s gonna be and what she’s gonna do and what she’ll discover.”
She also touched on raising her kids as a single mom and the example she hopes to set by continuing to work.
“I’ve felt some guilt, but I want to teach my daughter, ‘Don’t have guilt. Have a family, if you want, have a career if you want. You can do it all, just maybe not all at the same time,’” she said.
