A Disney guest tried to take advantage of the park’s strict dress code in exchange for a free shirt — but ended up “debunking” the popular myth instead.
TikTok user Heleni filmed herself in the Disney World parking lot in Orlando, Fla., taking off her shirt to reveal a bikini top. In the text overlay, she said she was trying out the “TikTok hack for a free shirt,” which isn’t necessarily an actual hack but more a string of TikTok videos that showed women being told their tops were “inappropriate” for the park and being asked to pick out a replacement shirt at a Disney store.
Disney World says in an FAQ that guests must wear shoes and shirts at all times. The site also claims Disney has the right to turn away guests in inappropriate clothing, which is described as clothing that “exposes excessive portions of the skin.”
Just as Heleni wanted, she was stopped by an employee before entering the park who, she said, “forced” her to buy a shirt to cover up.
“Debunked!” she wrote at the end of the TikTok.
Multiple commenters pointed out that too many guests had been trying to work the dress code in exchange for a free shirt that now Disney employees have the guests pay for them. There is nothing on Disney’s site that explicitly states guests were ever entitled to a free shirt if they were accused of breaking the dress code — commenters were basing this off of previous TikTokers who claimed they got free shirts.
“Cast member here,” one person wrote in the replies. “Doesn’t work anymore. It got too popular online and everyone was doing it.”
