In 2023, the entertainment world was rocked by the tragic death of Euphoria star Angus Cloud due to a drug overdose. This loss seemingly meant the end for his beloved character, Fezco, on the HBO series—or did it?
The answer unfolds in the Season 3 premiere of Euphoria, as viewers are taken by surprise halfway through the episode with revelations about Fezco O’Neill’s fate in the show’s universe.

Set around five years after the dramatic events of 2022’s Season 2, Euphoria Season 3 sees Rue (played by Zendaya) juggling a dangerous double life as a drug courier for the menacing Laurie (Martha Kelly) while also working as an Uber driver in Los Angeles. Her friend Lexi (Maude Apatow), however, is thriving in her role as a production assistant for a Hollywood producer, portrayed by Sharon Stone. Despite their hectic lives, the duo manages to reunite and share updates, which is when we discover what happened to Fez.
Fans of Euphoria might recall the charmingly innocent flirtation between Fezco and Lexi in Season 2. During an interview with DECIDER in early 2022, series stars Maude Apatow and Angus Cloud fondly discussed the development of this storyline, reflecting the chemistry and excitement both actors felt about their characters’ interactions.
“I thought it would be a funny idea if Lexi and Fez became an unlikely friendship and I think it’s so sweet,” Apatow said. “I’m glad it worked out, but yeah it was super fun working with Angus.”
“Maude is the best. I love Maude to death,” Cloud said. “She’s the sweetest girl ever and Lexi is also the sweetest girl ever. I think it’s literally just that her innocence brings out the innocence in me, you know?”
The pairing was an immediate hit with fans, who rooted for the show’s two most kind-hearted characters to get closer, despite their very different lifestyles.
So it should come as no surprise that we learn about what happened to Fezco in the world of Euphoria in a scene where Rue is catching up with Lexi.
“You really should call Fez,” Rue says suddenly, revealing that he’s not only alive, but he misses Lexi. So where is he?
What Happened to Fez on Euphoria? How Euphoria Season 3 Handles Angus Cloud’s Untimely Death:
A conversation between Rue and Lexi reveals that Fez is currently in prison, facing up to thirty years of jail time.
Of course, this is probably where we should have expected Fez to be, since Euphoria Season 2 ends with him getting arrested by the cops. His adopted little brother Ashtray (Javon Walton) sadly died in the midst of a shootout with the officers who had arrived at their house, but Fez survived, despite the fact that a stray bullet caught him.
So Fez lives! In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Euphoria creator, writer, and director Sam Levinson explained the poignant reason why he made this creative choice.
“I loved Angus very deeply and I fought very hard to keep him clean while he was here. I think when he passed away, it made me sort of step back and go what is the story I want to tell, what is it I want to say? What matters in life?” Levinson said.
“I couldn’t keep him alive in real life but I could keep his character alive in the show,” he said. “I kept him alive and the character has got a great arc. I think he’d be very proud of it.”
Time will tell how Cloud’s role will evolve onscreen in Euphoria Season 3.
