Dolly Parton look-alike contests have been taking place for years. Here’s what Parton said about some of the winners.
Dolly Parton’s larger-than-life appearance has inspired a number of look-alike contests over the years. Parton is well aware that these take place and even participated in one. Sometimes, though, she found the winners a bit surprising. Parton once called the winners “pigs.”
Dolly Parton wasn’t impressed with the winners of her look-alike contests
Dolly Parton look-alike contests have been taking place for decades. People don tight clothing, blonde wigs, and bright makeup, and compete to see who looks the most like the country singer. Parton said she finds them fun, not insulting.
“Who would be better to impersonate than Dolly Parton?” she said in 1978, per the book Dolly on Dolly. “All you gotta do is get a big blonde wig, make-up, and if you’re pretty well proportioned … or you can even fake it. The best parts of Dolly Parton look-alike contests are guys dressed up like girls. It’s so easy to do me.”
Parton has even gone to some of the contests and met with the winners. In an insult to both them and herself, Parton called them “pigs.”
“They were the biggest bunch of pigs I ever saw, most of them,” she said. “I thought to myself, Is that how people think I look? I thought, Oh, Lord, some of them were in worse shape than I even thought I was. I’ve only seen two that would even be classified as a human being.”
In later years, though, Parton joked that the winners were prettier than she could ever hope to be.
