Excitement is building as casting progresses for Donnie Wahlberg’s new project, Boston Blue, a spin-off from the popular series Blue Bloods. Reports suggest that Wahlberg is keen to find a way to include his former co-star and mentor, Tom Selleck, in this new venture.

“Donnie is all about loyalty, and he’s determined to secure a role for Tom,” an insider reveals to Closer. “The two maintain a strong friendship, staying in touch regularly. Donnie knows Tom was disappointed when Blue Bloods ended, and while Tom isn’t pushing for it, Donnie feels it’s only right to bring him on board. Beyond duty, he genuinely enjoys working with Tom.”

After airing its final episode in December 2024 and sparking much fan speculation, it was eventually announced that Donnie, now 55, would lead a spin-off titled Boston Blue.

Joining Donnie in this new CBS series are Sonequa Martin-Green, Ernie Hudson, and Maggie Lawson. The show is slated for a fall release, and viewers are eager to see if Selleck, now 80, will reprise his role as Frank Reagan in a guest capacity, alongside his on-screen son, who transitions to a role with the Boston PD. According to Selleck’s IMDb, he is currently involved with an untitled Jesse Stone project amidst the buzz about Boston Blue.

“Their connection is truly familial, and Donnie misses that dynamic,” the source adds. “He’s optimistic about making it happen, knowing fans would be thrilled. Even if Tom doesn’t take on a full-time role, occasional appearances would be a perfect fit at this stage in his career.”

A separate insider previously said that Tom was interested in making an appearance on Boston Blue.

“Tom’s been pretty vocal when it comes to his feelings about the network ending Blue Bloods,” the second source told Closer in February. “He did not want to say goodbye to that role, so naturally he’s very open to coming back and doing cameos on Donnie’s show.”

The second source said that Donnie and Tom have been friends for more than a decade and still have a tight bond despite Blue Bloods ending.

“They are still very close, over the nearly 15 years they worked together they developed such a fantastic relationship,” the source added. “They’re genuine friends, in a lot of ways they grew to be like family, that’s how bonded they were.”

“They both got emotional filming their last dinner scene on Blue Bloods because it was the last, but now that this series is happening, they may get to do another,” the second source continued. “It’s set in Boston so it won’t be a regular family dinner thing like on the last show but there’s the potential and Tom would be all for doing it.”
