Drew Barrymore was always “jealous” of the kids who could call their parents to pick them up from school when they were sick.

On this morning’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the actress-turned-talk show host opened up about her very hands-off upbringing — and how it inspired her to do the exact opposite for her own two daughters.

“We are so determined to be these capable moms — these accountable, these trustworthy [moms],” Barrymore told singer Moon Unit Zappa, who grew up in a similar situation with her parents, Frank Zappa and Gail Zappa.

“Did you beat yourself up about every little thing along the way?” Barrymore asked. “Everything to me was very devastating and took me a long time to recover from if it wasn’t in the traditional family dynamic that I swore I would do for my family because I did not grow up that way.”

Zappa said her difficult childhood inspired her to want more for her kids.

“I wanted to see what it looked like,” she explained. “What did it look like when there is stability and love and when you can just keep making sure that their interests are reflected? Like, ‘Oh, you like this? Here’s more of that thing you’re so good at and you love,’ for example. ‘Here’s soup when you’re sick,’ for example.”

The soup comment struck a cord with Barrymore, who said her parents were never around like her friends’ parents.

“It’s weird stuff like that. It’s soup when you’re sick,” she said. “I remember all the kids at school would go into the office to call their parents when they were sick and I could never get ahold of anybody. I was so jealous of those kids who would call and be like, ‘Mom, Dad, come pick me up.’ I would sit there be like, ‘What’s that like?’”

She added, “I can’t believe I’m getting to have this conversation because I so get it and I’m like, ‘So, I’ll be that [for my daughters].’”

The Drew Barrymore Show airs on weekdays on CBS. You can check the website for local airtimes.
