Imagine joining a romantasy book club with none other than Dylan Efron—sounds like a dream come true!
On Tuesday, October 28, the 33-year-old Efron left the Dancing With the Stars panel spellbound with a Viennese waltz inspired by his beloved book genre. Following his captivating performance, he shared some exclusive insights with Us Weekly on curating an ideal reading list.
“I’d advise steering clear of ACOTAR because it’s what everyone seems to pick,” he revealed, referring to Sarah J. Maas‘s popular series, A Court of Thorns and Roses.
Though Efron isn’t particularly fond of ACOTAR, he holds Maas’ Throne of Glass series in high regard. Despite his reservations, he did mention that of the Archeron Sisters, Elaine is the one he feels aligns most with his preferences.
“Nesta is my favorite, but my type would likely be Elaine,” he confessed. “Among the trio, Nesta stands out as my top pick.”
Currently, Efron is in the middle of the Crowns of Nyaxia series.
“The first book’s awesome,” he gushed, saying his best advice is “just start” reading, even though “audiobooks are easier.”
Efron discussed his love of audiobooks in the rehearsal package shown before Tuesday’s performance.
“One thing you may not know about me is, I love audiobooks,” he said. “In particular, my guilty pleasure is romantasy — romantic fantasy.”
Efron went on to pitch his idea to partner Daniella Karagach.
“I’ll be a vampire. You’re a human. You want to kill me,” he said. “You’re actually a human who can’t see.”
The duo received a score of 35 out of 40 for their dance set to “Can’t Help Falling In Love (DARK)” by Tommee Profitt and Brooke — and yes, Karagach was blindfolded.
Efron clarified in his Instagram comments that the inspiration was from Slaying the Vampire Conqueror by Carissa Broadbent, explaining that he was dressed as the character Asar because “Atrius has giant horns.”
Author Broadbent shared her thoughts on Efron’s dance via Instagram Stories.
“Never watched Dancing With the Stars in my life but I’m watching tonight,” she wrote. “They’ve got my completely unbiased vote!! Seriously this is SO F***ING COOL.”
Broadbent also commented on Efron’s Instagram post from the evening.
“You got my vote!!” she shared. He replied, “That’s a win for us.”
Efron often shares what books he’s reading via Instagram, telling Page Six in June that he’s a “multitask listener,” playing audiobooks while doing other things to be “transported to another world.”
And for anyone wondering, he’s a Fourth Wing fan.
“This one doesn’t need a summary, but for those who aren’t aware, it’s like Hogwarts, but instead of cozy magic classes, it’s life-or-death dragon boot camp and some steamy love,” he told Page Six. “After reading ACOTAR, I got the romantasy bug … but I felt like this series is the superior franchise to start if you’re thinking of picking one.”
Dancing With the Stars premieres on ABC and Disney+ Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET, with new episodes streaming the next day on Hulu.
