Miley Cyrus is back in the spotlight, not just with a limo waiting, but with some juicy tidbits from her past. In the newly released Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special on Disney+, the chart-topping singer shared a surprising revelation: she “secretly” dated fellow Disney Channel star Dylan Sprouse while both were leading their own shows on the network.
Speaking with host Alex Cooper, Cyrus reminisced, “Dylan was my boyfriend. I thought he was the cutest… Maybe there were rumors, but now it’s confirmed. Dylan was my crush. Their dad would take us out for sushi. I was into the whole scene. It was like a two-for-one deal—bring the brother along. Hello!” She was referring to Dylan’s twin, Cole Sprouse, with whom he co-starred in The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and The Suite Life on Deck. Interestingly, Hannah Montana had crossover episodes with The Suite Life series, first in 2006 and then again in 2009.
You might be wondering when exactly this brief romance unfolded. For two decades, fans have been aware of Cyrus’s high-profile relationship with Nick Jonas from the Jonas Brothers, but the Dylan Sprouse chapter was kept under wraps. Dylan is now married to model Barbara Palvin.
Well, a resurfaced interview clip from Dylan and Cole’s September 2008 interview with Jimmy Kimmel proves that this wasn’t the first time their puppy love was brought up. In the clip, Dylan, then 16, shares that he was “probably” about 11 or 12 years old when he and Cyrus, who is only a few months younger than him, dated.
Reflecting on the past, Dylan commented, “It’s hard to recall precisely. We met on her set, I think, and we dated. But then Nick Jonas walked by, and it was over.”
Cyrus’s relationship with Jonas spanned from 2006 to 2007, culminating in her hit song “7 Things” from the Breakout album, a track famously inspired by Jonas. In the anniversary special, she disclosed that she had the Jonas Brothers open for her Best of Both Worlds Tour because she was dating Jonas at the time and wanted him close by.
“Literally, the reason that the Jonas Brothers were on tour with me was because Nick was my boyfriend and I wanted to not leave my boyfriend,” she told Chappell Roan in the special. “So, I’d be like, ‘Okay, I’ll go on tour if my boyfriend can come!’ And they were like, ‘Cute have your boyfriend open for the show.’”
