Eve Didn’t Think Her Relationship With Her Husband Would Last Because of His Kids

Rapper Eve gave birth to her first child with husband Maximillion Cooper not too long ago. Although this was the first time Eve became a mother, Cooper was already a father before dating the Ruff Ryder artist. When Eve found out Cooper was a family man, she questioned the longevity of their relationship.

How Eve reacted to the idea of becoming a stepmom

Eve confided that she stepped a bit out of her comfort zone when she dated Cooper. Apart from being in an interracial relationship, she and Cooper had two completely different backgrounds. Eve was a rapper from Philadelphia whereas her husband was a British entrepreneur.

But out of all their differences, what made Eve really worry about her relationship was her husband’s kids. Cooper had four children that he shared with ex-wife Julie Brangstrup. Although she’s grown close with her new family, Eve was initially very uncomfortable with being a stepmom. So much so that she didn’t expect her and Cooper’s relationship to go the distance.

“It’s been now 10 and a half years I’ve been in their lives and they’ve been in my life. They’ve grounded me. In the beginning, when I first met my husband, then-boyfriend, I was like, ‘This is never gonna last because you got four kids! How’s this gonna work?’” she said in an interview with People. “But then I met the kids and honestly was like ‘Wow, kids are amazing.’”

But Eve admitted that it took quite some time before she truly adapted to her new family.

“It did take two or three years to adjust, just our relationship with the kids. But I have to say I’m very lucky. I feel very, very lucky that I had my insta-kids — I call them my bonus children,” she said.

Eve didn’t want her new kids to go too far back into her past

Eve had to make a lot of life changes after committing herself to Cooper. It was noted that one of the reasons why she left her roundtable talk show, The Talk, was to be with her husband in London. But one thing Eve can’t change is the past. Before settling down for the quiet life, she was known for the aggressive content in her rap music. But they represented a side of the emcee that she would’ve rather her kids didn’t know about. Even though, according to Eve, her children find it cool to have a rap superstar as their mom.

“I’m really lucky because they are very proud of me. It’s really sweet,” Eve said. “I do hope they don’t go too far back in the day to listen to certain things. That is my hope. … Oh lord, the whole first album! You know what, it’s fine, but it’s just definitely a lot more out-there, vulgar, probably cursing, than I am now.”

But she might not have been the same hardcore hip hop artist that she was once back then, at least not entirely. Eve also asserted that being a stepmom changed her. She didn’t grow up with a family as open and welcoming as Cooper’s. Her bonus children taught the “Who’s That Girl” singer how to let her guard down in a way she never had before.

“Being married and having stepchildren has completely changed me because when I first met him, I didn’t even know how to talk to kids,” she once said in an interview with xoNicole. “I was like, ‘Do you want to color? What do you want?!’ I was so weird with the kids, and it takes a minute to settle, but I definitely softened as a person. I don’t come from a family of huggy, ‘I love you’ type of affectionate people. If we kind of know you, you’ll get the head nod and, with the kids, you have to be open to hugs and that changed me, and it’s a really nice thing.”
