When it comes to Sunday nights, HBO continues to reign supreme. Last night, on November 30, viewers were captivated with fresh episodes of IT: Welcome To Derry and I Love LA, alongside the season finale of Tim Robinson’s delightfully bizarre comedy, The Chair Company. Fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that both The Chair Company and I Love LA have already secured renewals for their second seasons. As anticipation builds, it seems only a matter of time before an official announcement for Welcome To Derry Season 2 graces our screens.
While HBO is a staple for many on Sunday evenings, Adult Swim is quietly becoming a go-to spot to wind down the weekend, thanks in part to the quirky animated series Smiling Friends by Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack.
This cherished show chronicles the adventures of employees at a small company with a big mission: spreading joy. With its short, 11-12 minute episodes and its unique brand of absurdist humor, Smiling Friends is a binge-worthy treasure.
As fans eagerly await news, the question remains: what lies ahead for this late-night gem? Will Smiling Friends return for a fourth season? Here’s what we know so far about the future of this beloved series.
What does the future hold for this late-night favorite? Will there be a Smiling Friends Season 4? Here’s everything you need to know.
How Many Episodes Are There of Smiling Friends Season 3?
The third season of Smiling Friends consists of eight episodes. The season finale (Season 3, Episode 8: “The Glep Ep”) is now streaming on Adult Swim and HBO Max.
Will There Be a Smiling Friends Season 4?
Yes! In June 2025, it was announced that the series earned a two-season pickup, which means that Smiling Friends will be back for Seasons 4 and 5.
“It means you don’t have to make the same episode that the engine of the show relies on, which is the smiling friends go out and help a depressed character,” co-creator Michael Cusack told The Hollywood Reporter about the pickup. “Just like the shows we love and grew up with, the best part is now we can make a whole episode about a secondary character and zoom in on them more and explore the town.”
What Does The Future Hold For Smiling Friends?
There’s no official news on the show’s future beyond Season 5, but Cusack and co-creator Zach Hadel recently told The Hollywood Reporter that “leaving the audience wanting more is the best.”
“We’ll see how we feel after four and five, and then Zach and I will get into the war room and decide what the next plan is,” Cusack said. “We pretty much can guarantee it’s not going to go on as much as these other shows.”
Added Hadel: “Even if we had a thousand ideas at the end of season five, we’re not going to go on long. I will say that much. We’re not going to put a number up, but five is getting close to probably where we’ll want to wrap it up.”
