Logan Allen, who plays Kyle Townsend, told Showbiz Cheat Sheet that his character would be excited about the prospect of moving to Manhattan.

Pour it out! Netflix has renewed Sweet Magnolias for season 5, it announced on Tuesday.

‘Sweet Magnolias’ heads to New York City in season 5

The renewal news comes more than two months after season 4 hit the streamer in February 2025. The most recent installment of the small-town drama ended with several major developments, including the Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher) receiving a life-changing job offer that would require her to move herself and her family from Serenity to New York City. Meanwhile, Helen (Heather Headley) and Erik (Dion Johnstone) got engaged, and Annie (Anneliese Judge) and Ty (Carson Rowland) were on shaky ground and facing the prospect of a long-distance relationship as she prepares to head to art school in California.

In the season 4 finale, Maddie decided to accept the marketing job with her publishing company. But can she really leave her hometown – and her fellow Magnolias – behind? It sounds like it. Showrunner and executive producer Sheryl J. Anderson told Netflix’s Tudum that Maddie would be taking a leap out of her “comfort zone” in season 5, with the support of her friends Helen and Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott).

“We are thrilled to let the Magnolias take Manhattan,” Anderson said. “Not only is this adventure huge fun, it’s also an opportunity to explore the facets of their relationships in a new context.”

Logan Allen predicts Kyle will embrace change in the next season of ‘Sweet Magnolias’

Trading life in a close-knit Southern community for the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple will be a major change for Maddie and her family. But one person who shouldn’t have trouble embracing the change of scenery is Maddie’s middle child, Kyle. The theater-loving high school student will likely leap at the chance to explore New York City, actor Logan Allen told Showbiz Cheat Sheet in an interview earlier this year.

“That’s going to be interesting. I think,” he said of the family’s potential relocation. “I mean, Kyle, he wants to be a Broadway star man. He loves that. He’s like, ‘Hey, man, that’s my element.’ So I think Kyle is once again open to change.”

Kyle’s willingness to embrace a new adventure comes after he endured some big changes in season 4, including the sudden death of his father, Bill (Chris Klein), Allen said.

“As you get older, you also learn to be more flexible,” he said. “You also learn that spontaneity is inevitable. You can prepare for life as much as you want to, but it’s never going to go the way that you think. That’s a big lesson Kyle learns this season with Bill’s death and everything going on with his new friend coming in and all that. And so I think he’s open to change. I think that’s massive when it comes to discovering yourself just in real life. And I think that’s what Kyle has figured out, he has to be open to change. And I think he’s excited for that.”

Kyle’s relationship with his mom has also evolved. He’s more mature now, and more willing to support her on her own journey, Allen said.

“I think that you just see him be there for her happiness and support her through everything [throughout season 4],” he said. “And I think with her book career, this is something that Kyle, once again is there for her happiness and whatever way he could support her, he will.”

Sweet Magnolias Seasons 1-4 are streaming on Netflix.
