Meet Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Ethan Chapin, and Xana Kernodle, four young lives tragically cut short. These University of Idaho students lived together in an off-campus apartment, sharing both their academic journeys and personal lives.
On the night of November 12, 2022, Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen visited a local sports bar, while Xana Kernodle and her boyfriend, Ethan Chapin, attended a fraternity party. By the early hours of November 13, all four had returned to their three-story rental home, unaware of the tragedy that awaited them.
Kaylee Goncalves, 21, was a senior majoring in general studies at the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences. She was on the cusp of graduating in December and had secured a job with a marketing firm in Austin, Texas, according to her friend Jordyn Quesnell, who spoke to The New York Times.
Madison Mogen, also 21, was pursuing a degree in marketing. She had been inseparable from Kaylee since the sixth grade and was planning to relocate to Boise after graduation. Family friend Jessie Frost shared these details with The Idaho Statesman, painting a picture of Madison’s close-knit connections and future aspirations.

Kernodle was a junior majoring in marketing, the University said at the time. She and Chapin—who majored in recreation, sport and tourism management—had been dating since the spring, the roommates’ neighbor Ellie McKnight told NBC News.
