COUNTRY music singer Sammy Kershaw has broken his silence after being caught going through airport security with a loaded firearm.
The star was in Louisiana when the incident occurred on May 28.

Transportation Security Administration agents found the gun in his carry-on bag as he was going through security.
He was later hit with a $5,000 penalty, as reported by Absolute Publicity.
Kershaw, 67, has since spoken out about what unfolded inside the airport in Lafayette.
“It was early, I was half-awake and clearly not thinking straight,” he said.
“I’ve sang songs about heartbreak and hard times, but not forgetting to check my carry-on for a loaded firearm.
“That’s a new one.”
He has since told his fan base to double check their luggage.
“Check your bags, check ‘em twice. Let’s all stay safe out there,” he said.
Penalties for being caught with a loaded firearm range from $3,000 to more than $12,000, according to the TSA. There is also a risk of a criminal referral.
Kershaw is currently on tour and is set to perform in Roland, Oklahoma, on June 27.
His tour will see him perform in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Iowa, and Nebraska.
In December, the crooner is set to perform at The Showroom at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

During his career, he has had more than 10 top ten hits, and more than 25 of his tracks ranked in the top 40 of Billboard’s Hot Country Songs charts.
His idol is the legendary crooner George Jones, who was known as The Rolls-Royce of Country Music, and met the singer when he was 14.
Kershaw’s best performing track is his 1993 hit She Don’t Know She’s Beautiful, which is his most-listened to song on Spotify.
His other well-known tracks include Queen of My Double Wide Trailer, Third Rate Romance, Cadillac Style, and Vidalia.
The singer has tried his luck in politics by running for the GOP Lieutenant Governor nomination in Louisiana in 2007 and 2010, but was unsuccessful in the primaries.
Kershaw, a Grammy-nominated artist, is best known for his hit She Don’t Know She’s Beautiful, which he released in 1993.
The track reached number one in Canada and the US, and it has been listened to more than 138.7 million times on Spotify.
Kershaw’s other well-known tracks include Queen of My Double Wide Trailer, Third Rate Romance, Cadillac Style, and Vidalia.
He has been dubbed the heir apparent to the legendary crooner George Jones.
The singer has performed since he was 12 and told The Villages News in 2016 he wanted to be like Jones.
“I met Jones when I was 14,” he recalled.
“He was my idol.”
During his career, he has opened shows for the likes of Jones and other singers such as Conway Twitty and Mel Street.
More than 20 of his hits have reached the top 40 and he has three platinum and six gold albums.
Outside of music, he ran unsuccessfully as the Republican lieutenant governor candidate in Louisiana in 2007 and 2010.
He finished third in both of the primaries.
Kershaw has been married three times. He and fellow country singer Lorrie Morgan tied the knot in 2001 but the pair divorced in 2007.
His current wife is Mendy Kershaw, who he wished a happy birthday on June 14 – two weeks before the airport incident.
In a social media post, he shared snaps of the pair beaming as he paid tribute to her.
The U.S. Sun has approached Kershaw for comment.
