The public had a lot to say about Simone Biles’ Kentucky Derby ‘Riders Up’ call. Here’s why they slammed the Olympic gold medalist for her rendition.
Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles captivated attendees at the 151st Kentucky Derby in Louisville with her presence. Accompanied by her husband, NFL player Jonathan Owens, Biles donned a lavender mini dress by Chara, complemented by a matching hat and silver sandals. The gymnastics legend had the incredible opportunity to perform the “Riders Up” call ahead of the races. Unfortunately, it didn’t go over well with fans. Here’s why.
Fans didn’t care for Simone Biles taking part in the ‘Riders Up’ call at the 151st Kentucky Derby
The Team USA GOAT, Simone Biles, is known for her incredible gymnastics skills. Now, she’s spreading her wings and taking part in public events. Biles gave the signature “Riders Up” call at the 151st Kentucky Derby in May 2025. The call signals for jockeys to get on their horses and prepare to race.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Biles says to the camera while dressed in her lavender mini dress and matching hat. “The city of Louisville, the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and sports fans from around the world have been waiting for this moment. Riders up!” She then blows kisses to the camera as the crowd cheers.
Fans on Reddit were divided over the moment.
“That’s too bad because this is nothing but an absolute horror show of animal cruelty, and I wish someone as amazing as Simone Biles wasn’t participating,” a fan commented.
“That was the worst ‘Riders Up’ I have ever witnessed,” another fan commented on the NBC Sports YouTube clip. “I love Simone, but that was something. Her voice was like a toy Barbie doll, and what was with that pose? Totally not dignified, as is the tradition of the Kentucky Derby.”
However, other fans adored Biles’ look and loved how she and Jonathan Owens complemented each other. While Biles is bound to get hate now and again, there’s no doubt that she’ll continue to make the most of her fame as she approaches gymnastics retirement.
