On April 14, Katy Perry took a brief, star-studded trip to space. Joining Perry were Gayle King and Jeff Bezos’ fiance, Lauren Sánchez, among others. While Perry and the other passengers have spoken about the significance of their journey, many people have criticized the trip. A number of celebrities have even spoken out about it.

Katy Perry went to space with Blue Origin

At 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Bezos’ company, Blue Origin, sent an all-female crew into space. The trip only lasted around 10 minutes, but the group spent several minutes in zero gravity. According to King, Perry sang Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World” while aboard. 

“I think that it’s not about me, it’s not about singing my songs, it’s about a collective energy in there,” Perry said, per NPR. “It’s about making space for future women, and taking up space and belonging, and it’s about this wonderful world that we see right out there and appreciating it. This is all for the benefit of Earth.”

Afterward, Perry said the journey made her feel “super connected to love” and confirmed she would write a song about the experience.

Social media users have endlessly made fun of the story

Many people are much less moved by the space trip than Perry was. She has faced an outpouring of criticism from social media users. Many have poked fun at the brevity of the journey.

“Katy Perry went to space for like 4 minutes wtf is she kissing the ground for,” wrote one X (formerly Twitter) user.

Others pointed out the fact that the historic space journey fell a little flat.

“In 2016, ‘they’re sending Katy Perry to space’ would have sent shockwaves across the global news. Today it’s just a popcrave tweet on the tl. Like sure, whatever I guess,” wrote one user.

“Katy Perry’s space mission being as underwhelming as her music,” wrote one user, accompanied by a gif of Real Housewives of New York’s Ramona Singer laughing.

“Literally only Katy Perry could make going to space underwhelming,” wrote another.

Many also described the journey as tone deaf.

“‘They sent Katy Perry to space’ girl they are taking away all our civil liberties on earth. I am not keeping track of where Katy Perry is,” wrote one person.

Emily Ratajkowski and Olivia Munn also criticized Katy Perry’s trip to space

Several celebrities have even spoken out about the trip, too. Model Emily Ratajkowski called Perry out for saying the trip was “for the benefit of Earth.”

“That space mission this morning, that’s end time s***, like this is beyond parody,” she said in a TikTok. “Saying that you care about Mother Earth, and it’s about Mother Earth and you’re going up in a spaceship that is built and paid for by a company that’s singlehandedly destroying the planet? Look at the state of the world and think about how many resources went into putting these women into space. For what? What was the marketing there?… I’m disgusted.”

Actor Olivia Munn said she also found the mission off putting. 

“I’m just saying this,” she said on Today With Jenna & Friends. “I know this is probably not the cool thing to say, but there are so many other things that are so important in the world right now.”

She added that it felt wasteful to spend so much money on a 10-minute trip for celebrities, when every day people are facing so many real problems.

“I know this is probably obnoxious but like, it’s so much money to go to space, and there’s a lot of people who can’t even afford eggs. What’s the point? Is it historic that you guys are going on a ride? I think it’s a bit gluttonous. Space exploration was to further our knowledge and to help mankind. What are they gonna do up there that has made it better for us down here?”
