Great British Bake Off star Iain Ross aka ‘Yeastie Boy’ has stunned fans with a major announcement just four weeks into the new season of the Channel 4 show.

The amateur baker took to social media to reveal he’s got engaged to his long-term girlfriend Dervla McLaughlin.

The 29-year-old software engineer from Belfast, who has won over viewers with his quirky sourdough bakes, shared the news on Monday.

Iain’s emotional post showed Dervla flashing a sparkling ring against the backdrop of Crawfordsburn waterfall in Northern Ireland.

Alongside the snap, he penned: ‘Don’t suppose you know anyone who can make a decent wedding cake?’

Iain then added: ‘A picture at this waterfall every year for the past 8 years, and a special lil one to complete the frame.’

Fans and friends flooded the comments with congratulations, including Bake Off co-host Noel Fielding, who wrote: ‘Yay ❤️ congrats to you both! x x x x.’

Dervla, who lives with Iain in Belfast with their cat Viktor, recently said she struggled to keep his appearance on this year’s Bake Off series a secret – admitting she ‘nearly burst all the blood vessels in my eyes trying not to tell anyone’.

With over 263,000 followers on Instagram and over half a million on TikTok, Iain is a bona fide baking influencer.

He styles himself as ‘Yeastie Boy’ – a play on The Beastie Boys, an 80s American hip-hop group – as a nod to his love of music and baking.

Iain has become known on the show for combining his love of music with baking – decorating his sourdough crusts with album artwork and experimenting with fermented fruits and vegetables to give his loaves an extra kick.

But Iain’s time in the tent so far hasn’t been smooth and he recently faced criticism from Paul Hollywood.

In last week’s ‘Back To School’ challenge, judge Paul called his banana flapjacks ‘slightly under baked’, while Dame Prue Leith said his elaborate fete-themed showstopper had a ‘gritty’ texture.

Despite the criticism, Iain survived a close call and remains in the competition as the series moves into week five.

So far, four bakers have left the tent: Hassan, Leighton, Pui Man and Jessika.

Speaking after her shock elimination last week, Jessika said: ‘This was going to be my last year to apply and I feel chuffed that I made it to the tent.

‘I have met some incredibly talented inspiring bakers so it’s not all bad.’

Jessika also revealed that her time in the famous white tent included striking up a cheeky bond with host Alison Hammond.

‘I know she loves hard-boiled sweets, so I got her a giant hard-boiled diamond ring and asked her in Spanish if she’d marry me,’ Jessika laughed.

‘She was playing hard to get and, maybe out of kindness, said “yes”. I think Alison and I might technically be engaged now.’
