Black girls in figure skating have historically been underrepresented, but in recent years, barriers are being broken and young Black figure skating athletes are leaving an indelible mark on the sport. In an upcoming five-part Disney docuseries, Harlem Ice, the entertainment giant tells the story of figure skating girls in Harlem who are taking their talents to the next level. Check out the official trailer now!

So just what can budding figure skaters expect to see in this upcoming documentary?

Well, according to Disney.com, Harlem Ice is a 5-part documentary series following the girls of Figure Skating in Harlem as they prepare for competitions, performances and a life changing global experience. Through their eyes, we experience the highs and lows of the FSH Season, and the unique experiences they have as girls of color breaking the ice ceiling and gaining access to a global stage.

“Being on a team with people of color is very different,” one skater says in the series’ trailer.

Another skater adds, “It’s a lot of pressure”

“When we skate on the ice, we make a statement. We are girls of color, and we’re powerful,” one of the skating coaches declares in the trailer.

The docuseries is executive-produced by Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts, along with entertainment industry titan, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer through Imagine Documentaries.

The series will feature Tori Prentice, Ashley Prentice, Adrianna Walker, Ariyana Peal, Ila Epperson, Katie Thordarson, and Vashti Lonsdale as they work to overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams on the ice.

Figure Skating in Harlem, which is the organization behind Harlem Ice, is a first of its kind organization. The organization is dedicated to mentoring young girls of color in underprivileged communities. They also are making it their mission to help to transform the lives of these young girls and help them to grow in confidence, leadership and academic achievement for their futures.

All episodes of Harlem Ice will be available for streaming exclusively on Disney+ starting February 12, 2025.
