“Merry Christmas, Harry!” – HBO Max
The streaming service has unveiled the trailer for its anticipated Harry Potter series, announcing that the show will premiere on Christmas Day, years ahead of its initial 2027 release projection. This sneak peek follows closely on the heels of a first-look image showcasing Dominic McLaughlin stepping into the shoes of the iconic young wizard.
The debut season of Harry Potter will explore the events of The Philosopher’s Stone (also known as The Sorcerer’s Stone), the inaugural book in J.K. Rowling’s globally acclaimed series, which first hit the big screens in 2001. Fans familiar with the original storyline will find the show’s premise predictable yet enticing:
“To his Aunt Petunia, Harry Potter is nothing out of the ordinary. But everything changes on his 11th birthday when he receives an acceptance letter to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, unveiling a world filled with wonder, camaraderie, and enchantment. However, this new chapter in his life also brings him face-to-face with a formidable foe from his past.”
The trailer kicks off with scenes of Harry (played by McLaughlin) enduring his Aunt Petunia’s (Bel Powley) taunts, being banished to his cupboard under the stairs, and fleeing from school bullies. His fortunes shift dramatically upon receiving his Hogwarts letter and meeting Hagrid (Nick Frost), who enlightens him about the courage and kindness of his late parents.
In the trailer, we also see Harry aboard the Hogwarts Express, sitting with Ron Weasley (Alastair Stout) and Hermione Granger (Arabella Stanton). Others teased in the trailer include Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.
