Find out what Troy Aikman said when asked about being neighbors with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current Monday Night Football broadcaster Troy Aikman has been asked about living near some famous residents in Santa Barbara County.
The NFL Hall of Famer has a home in Montecito near none other than Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. However, despite living in the same neighborhood as the Sussexes, Aikman made it clear that he’s not interested in hanging out with the duke and duchess.
Here’s more on that, plus what several of Meghan and Harry’s other neighbors have said about them.
Aikman doesn’t talk to neighbors Prince Harry and Meghan
Aikman has a property in the celebrity enclave and was asked about Meghan and Harry while speaking with Us Weekly to promote his EIGHT Elite Light Beer.
The former football player joked that he doesn’t have anything in common with the former working royals saying: “I don’t think they’re drinking much light beer.”
Aikman added, “I haven’t run into them. But they are there from what I can gather. I think anyone with a heartbeat knows that they’re out there. But I’m not hanging with them, that’s for sure.”
Neighbors dubbed Sussexes ‘local villains,’ and mocked Meghan as ‘Viscountess of Montecito’
Aikman’s comments have echoed what some other neighbors have said about Meghan and Harry. Other residents of the coastal community have also noted that although they don’t see much of the couple their presence there is known, but not in a good way.
Longtime resident, Mary Sheldon, who owns a bookstore in the town, agreed that no one sees much of Meghan or Harry but they know they’re there.
“I think they’re basically ignored,” she opined, adding, “I have seen black SUVs on my road.”
When speaking to Vanity Fair one neighbor complained that the town used to be a “quiet” place and claimed that’s not the case anymore because of the prince and “the starlet,” which is why they’ve been dubbed “local villains.” Moreover, they attribute the Sussexes’ presence to the “increase in housing prices, out-of-towners coming in driving too fast, and taking up all the street parking,” and not being able to “just walk into Lucky’s for dinner anymore.”
Another neighbor, PR and communications worker Barry Maher, described the duke and duchess as nothing more than a “traveling soap opera.”
And another fumed: “I still think they’re the most entitled, disingenuous people on the planet. They moved away from England to get away from the scrutiny of the press, and all they do is try and get in the press in the United States.”
The Daily Mail‘s Martin Robinson pointed to a recent opinion poll showing that Meghan’s popularity in the U.S. has dropped to only 4 in 10 people having a favorable view of her.
“[The] new opinion poll is a wake-up call for ‘The Sovereign of Santa Barbara,’ the ‘Viscountess of Montecito,’ ‘Me-Me-Meghan Markle,’” he quipped. “I’ll cut Charles some slack. Since 1776, we rebels haven’t much cared for kings. But what’s Meg’s excuse?”
