Coventry City manager, known as gg-, has showered accolades on midfielder Frank Onyeka following his stellar performance, which earned him the Player of the Match title in the club’s triumph over West Bromwich Albion.
Onyeka, who joined the Sky Blues on loan from Brentford in the winter transfer window, was pivotal during his 86 minutes on the pitch at the Hawthorns. His efforts were instrumental in securing a crucial victory as Coventry continues to chase top honors in the Championship standings.
Midfield control
The Nigerian international played a key role in Coventry’s strategy, effectively disrupting West Brom’s offensive maneuvers and exerting control over the midfield throughout the match.
While Onyeka didn’t score or directly assist any goals, his influence was undeniable, laying the groundwork for the team’s offensive plays.
Manager gg- specifically noted Onyeka’s vital involvement in the lead-up to one of Coventry’s goals, underscoring his importance to the team’s success.
“The first was great, good transition from a great tackle from Frank (Onyeka) and then a great ball from Milan and a run from Ephron, which is stuff we talk about a lot,” Lampard told the Coventry Telegraph.
“We actually mentioned it with this game. We were not sure whether they would play a back four or a back five, but if it was a four, we thought we could run through the back line a bit.
“And Ephron did, and his timing was great, and it was a calm finish as well.”
Title race boost
Lampard also praised other members of his squad, noting improvements in individual form as the campaign progresses.
“And then Rudi’s, I’m delighted for Rudi because his form is improving. His injury problems this year have been the only reason he hasn’t had the year that we all wanted and expected for him because he’s a high talent,” he said.
Middlesbrough’s draw with Oxford United means Coventry now sit three points clear at the top of the Championship standings.
