On July 18, I Know What You Did Last Summer hit the theaters. The continuation of the slasher series’ storyline also reignited chatter about a rift between Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Jennifer Love Hewitt. All three starred in the first flick, with Prinze Jr. and Love Hewitt reprising their roles in the most recent installment. The actors are finally speaking on the I Know What You Did Last Summer feud that they insist never was.

Feud rumors date back to the 1990s

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Jennifer Love Hewitt were two of the most sought-after stars of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Having them appear in a film together at that point almost ensured it would be a blockbuster hit. I know What You Did Last Summer delivered in that department, but rumors of a feud between the starlets developed quickly.

When Gellar’s character, Helen Shivers, was killed off, rumors began swirling that Jennifer Love Hewitt manufactured the end of the character. Over the years, mention of the feud has bubbled up over and over, especially when new projects for the actors popped up. Their lack of crossover seemingly strengthened the theory. With Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt both starring in the latest installment, naturally, chatter about the feud has reignited. The stars have finally addressed it. According to everyone involved, there was never a problem, but there wasn’t a deep friendship, either.

Freddie Prinze Jr. has never talked much about Jennifer Love Hewitt, but he was quickly absorbed into the feud rumors because of his connection to Sarah Michelle Gellar. Prinze and Gellar have been married for decades. He is finally speaking out.

Freddie Prinze Jr. recently addressed the issue during a recent interview with Men’s Health. Prinze noted that he had absolutely no issue with Jennifer Love Hewitt. He said they worked together well, but at the end of the day, that’s all it ever was. Because they did not run in the same social circles, they had limited interactions when the cameras stopped rolling. Prinze Jr. described his relationship with Love Hewitt as “cool” and “professional,”  but told the outlet that they “weren’t bros.”

Jennifer Love Hewitt insists everything is fine, too

Freddie Prinze Jr. isn’t the only one who has weighed in on the alleged I Know What You Did Last Summer feud. Jennifer Love Hewitt has addressed the rumored bad blood, too. In December, Jennifer Love Hewitt appeared on I’ve Never Said This Before with Tommy DiDario. During the chat, she talked about her rumored feud. She said that there was never any issue. In fact, she said that she’s always rooted for Gellar and Prinze Jr., noting that she loved how they had been married so long.

The actor directly addressed the rumor that she was responsible for the death of Gellar’s character, Helen. She dismissed the notion as preposterous. She stated, “I was 18. They were not taking script notes from me.” Gellar appeared on Instagram this month and praised Jennifer Love Hewitt’s work in the movie.
