George R.R. Martin says multiple 'Game of Thrones' spinoffs including “some sequels” are still in development

The realm of Westeros may soon see an influx of new stories, as George R.R. Martin reveals that several Game of Thrones projects are discreetly advancing at HBO. Notably, these projects aren’t all anchored in the past.

HBO recently unveiled an ambitious, Marvel-esque roadmap for its Game of Thrones franchise, confirming that new seasons of House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms are expected to premiere within the next three years. Yet, according to Martin, there’s more brewing behind the scenes.

“In addition to The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon, there are other Game of Thrones spinoffs in the works,” Martin shared during an event reported by Los Siete Reinos. “Most of these are prequels. We have five or six series being developed, and I’m collaborating with others on them. Yes, there are some sequels too.”

The existing series both serve as prequels: House of the Dragon is set two centuries prior to Game of Thrones, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place about a century earlier. Martin has previously hinted at even older tales, such as Aegon the Conqueror’s saga and the much-discussed, yet dormant, Nymeria and 10,000 Ships stories.

However, the prospect of a series set after the events of Thrones has been approached with caution by both HBO and Martin. This is primarily due to the fact that Martin still has two books left to complete before delving into that era.

WARNING: Game of Thrones finale spoilers ahead!

Even with Season 8’s high body count, several major characters survived the series — making potential sequels fertile ground. Kit Harington previously confirmed he’d been workshopping a Jon Snow follow-up, though HBO ultimately “shelved” the idea after “a couple of years back and forth developing it.”

Fans have also been pulling hard for an Arya Stark continuation, especially after that horizon-bound final shot. Martin only fueled the speculation last winter when he casually mentioned grabbing pizza with Maisie Williams. “We also got together with Maisie Williams for pizza and pasta, and talked about… Well, no, better not get into that, do not want to jinx it,” he said. “But it could be so much fun.”

Of course, “in development” doesn’t guarantee anything. HBO famously spent $30 million on a Naomi Watts–led pilot for a prequel that never made it to air. Still, with Martin confirming that “some sequels” are officially in the mix, the door isn’t just open — it’s quietly creaking wider.
