Adam Sandler has hit it big with Happy Gilmore 2.
According to a release from Netflix, the highly anticipated sequel reportedly earned the streamer’s biggest U.S. opening weekend ever for a Netflix original film with a whopping 46.7 million views. The streamer reports this is also the highest viewership earned for any original film Sandler has ever made for Netflix.
Happy Gilmore 2 has sat at the top of the U.S. Top 10 Films list at number one since it premiered July 25.
Happy Gilmore also ranked at number three on the list with 11.4 million views, as did multiple other Sandler films including Grown Ups, Grown Ups 2, and Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation.
In the sequel, Happy Gilmore stages a comeback after a series of unfortunate events sends him on a downward spiral. Happy’s forced to reckon with his own self-doubt and his alcoholism as he tries to get back into the swing of things for the chance to win a golf tournament. While Happy does make amends with his former rival Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald), he finds a new foe in an entrepreneur trying to revamp golf (Benny Safdie).
The film is both an ode to the original, which aired in 1996, and a contemporary revamp with several unbelievable cameos including Travis Kelce, Eminem, Ken Jennings, and Sandler’s own wife and kids.
With these ratings, it’s possible Sandler will continue his ongoing partnership with Netflix through his company Happy Madison Productions.
Happy Gilmore 2 is just the latest of several Netflix original film Sandler has starred in over the years, making these viewership numbers a remarkable feat.
Sandler’s other films include Murder Mystery, Hubie Halloween, You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, Hustle, and more.
Happy Gilmore and Happy Gilmore 2 are streaming now on Netflix.
