Aaron Chalmers' ex Talia Oatway fears their son Oakley, 3, could die

Talia Oatway, the former partner of Aaron Chalmers, is facing a harrowing situation as their three-year-old son, Oakley, battles a new serious health issue. Talia, who shares Oakley with the Geordie Shore star, is grappling with fears for her son’s life following a devastating diagnosis.

Oakley was born with Apert Syndrome, a rare condition identified at birth, which affects the development of the skull, hands, and feet due to the premature fusion of bones. This condition, described by the NHS as a complex craniosynostosis, has posed significant challenges from the start.

Recently, Talia revealed that Oakley has been diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a potentially life-threatening condition characterized by an accumulation of fluid in the brain. This has added to the family’s concern after Oakley previously fell into a coma last year following complications from a planned skull operation.

Talia, who claims to be managing the care of her disabled son on her own, is understandably distraught as she navigates these challenging circumstances. Her focus remains on ensuring Oakley receives the best possible care amidst these new health obstacles.

Last year, Oakley ended up in a coma after complications during a planned operation on his skull.

While initially, Talia expected him to be in hospital for five days, she ended up uprooting her life for seven weeks to be by his side.

Oakley, who has already been put under general anaesthetics 19 times, has been living with just half his skull since then, after surgeons deemed it too dangerous to try to replace it.

Once they returned home, Talia realised something was wrong and took her little boy back to A&E.

Speaking to The Sun, the single mum-of-four explained: ‘Since that admission, we’ve been back and forth with hospitals and coming to A&E because he kept vomiting non-stop to the point where he was getting too dehydrated and needed a drip.

‘Then he got diagnosed with something called CVS – cyclic vomiting syndrome. He gets migraines, then he starts projectile vomiting. And that was because he got meningitis last year. It triggered a neurological condition.’

Oakley was given medication, but wasn’t responding and concerned doctors rushed him in for a CT scan, where they discovered he had a condition called hydrocephalus, which is a build-up of fluid on the brain.

Talia said: ‘The CT scan also showed that he had a bit of brain damage at the front of the brain from the meningitis last year. It also showed that his forehead they’d rebuilt was absorbing a percentage of the bone.’

Doctors have now fitted a shunt in Oakley’s brain to drain the fluid, and he is being monitored in hospital to see how his body will react.

Talia emotionally explained the ‘stress’ she is under as Oakley is non-verbal he is unable to tell her when he is feeling unwell.

The influencer first became known when she started dating Geordie Shore star Aaron in 2017.

The pair had a whirlwind romance and welcomed three children in quick succession – Romeo, five, Maddox, four, and Oakley.

When Oakley was three months old, the ‘pressure’ became too much for Aaron, who made the decision to end the couple’s relationship.

Since their split, Aaron has hit out at Talia on a number of occasions, but she has mostly kept a dignified silence.

Asked how she is coping with it all, Talia explained that she had ‘no option’ as she has to make sure her son is being cared for and is ‘always safe’.

She praised the NHS and revealed she sees a psychologist once a week to help her process what is going on.

Brave and caring Talia added that she will not let herself think about a worst-case scenario.

What Is Apert Syndrome?

Apert syndrome is a genetic condition, caused by a mutation (change) on a specific gene.

The gene mutation can be passed on from parent to child but in many cases develops sporadically.

As we grow older, the sutures gradually fuse (stick) together, usually after all head growth has finished.

When a child has craniosynostosis, the sutures fuse before birth. It can affect one suture or several.

As children with Apert syndrome have a characteristic appearance, no specific diagnostic tests are needed.

Depending on the severity of the skull fusion, treatment soon after birth may be needed if pressure inside the head is raised, breathing problems are severe or there is a risk of eye damage.
