How chronic illness, mother’s demise reshaped my life forever – Lady

A young Nigerian lady has shared a deeply heartbreaking struggle, recounting how she lost her mother at a time when she needed her the most.

The lady, identified as @b_o_r___ah on X, opened up in response to a viral post asking users to share their most heartbreaking life experience.

According to her, her struggles began in 2016 at just 14 years old, when her mother noticed changes in her posture and walking pattern. After several hospital visits, she was diagnosed with a collapsed femoral head in her left hip, a condition that required hip replacement surgery. However, doctors told her the procedure could not be done until she was at least 20 years old.

Her teenage years became defined by chronic pain, social withdrawal, and shame, as her left leg grew shorter than her right and she developed a pronounced limp. Despite the physical and emotional toll, she credited her mother as her source of strength.

What’s worse than heartbreak?

“One day in 2016,my mum noticed my change in posture and the way I walk, she asked if I was feeling any pain and I said no,and that was true.
She said she was going to observe for few more days, thinking it would go away.

It got worse as days went by,my mum couldn’t take it anymore and we went to the federal medical center.
That was when my whole life changed, did X-ray and was diagnosed with melted head of femur(I’ve forgotten the medical term)of my left hip.

REMEDY????
“Hip replacement surgery, and we cannot do that until she’s old enough (20/21y/old). I was 14,so that means I have to wait for 6 years.
I’ve always been a very shy and an introverted person before all of that happened, that moment ,it got worse.

I started missing school, whenever my mum sends me on an errand,I go outside to look for children that are younger than I am to go on my behalf, and of course I’ll bribe them. I never wish to go out for anything,I started limping so bad because my left leg began to get shorter ,few inches than the right leg.
You can never see me outside, and anytime I go outside,I do it for my mum.

Then the pain ,this one won’t go away for nothing I sleep in pain, wake with pain, every single step i take,I took in pain(still do). Sometimes I won’t be able to move an inch, the leg started getting heavy and stiff, hard to move. The first 2 years after being diagnosed was a nightmare,I started withdrawing from anything social, pain became my normal.

But my mum, that woman was a rock, she did everything to make my life easier. I stopped carrying anything heavy and anything light ,she would even follow me to go out because at one point I started undergoing a training (fashion designing).

The pain got worse and worse, omo!! he definition no dey dictionary.
As time went by,I started overcoming the shame of going out.
Shame turned my bestie. People would stare at me,they would whisper.
“See as she dey walk” While some would say “that’s what makes you special”
You don shut up?😒😒.

Fast forward to 2022 ,I was 20 and hope was beginning to become my friend,my whole soul lit up with joy. March came and we went to the hospital, the doctor on seat said “we can do it,it’s high time”.

We got the price and everything. I bet my mum was already planning on how to get the money.
It was about time.
MY HEALING TIME.
No it wasn’t.
A greater pain was added.
My mum got sick and we lost her in November that same year.
What’s worse than an heartbreak?.”
