Kitty Song Covey (Anna Cathcart) is striking out on her own in XO, Kitty but the new season of the bubbly teen romance pays homage to the trilogy that started it all.

Lara Jean’s (Lana Condor) presence is palpably felt throughout Season 2, though Condor sadly has yet to make an appearance on the show. Season 2 follows Kitty as she tries her best to focus on reconnecting with her family in Korea while grappling with her hidden feelings for her friend, Yuri Han (Gia Kim). But Kitty has several moments that harken back to her sister’s admittedly messy love life, so much so, it’s almost as if Lara Jean’s bad luck is beginning to rub off on her meddlesome little sister. But there’s one scene in particular that fans of To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before will certainly enjoy.

Fans will remember that Kitty cemented her matchmaker status after she mailed Lara Jean’s love letters to the boys they were addressed to when she was younger. Season 2, Episode 4 shows Kitty getting a taste of her own medicine when Stella secretly leaks her love letter to Yuri during a holiday at Min Ho’s ski cabin.

But unfortunately for Kitty, the love letter didn’t win her the love of her life as Lara Jean’s did with Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo); instead, it broke Yuri and Juliana up, and drove Yuri even farther away.

But the moment is almost made worth it by what happens next: Min Ho (Sang Heon Lee) spots Kitty in the hot tub by herself. And this time, the tables have turned. As Lara Jean waded into the hot tub in her dreamy nightgown to get the man she loves, it’s Min Ho who joins the lovesick Kitty in the hot tub — but not before truly making the scene his own and removing his designer jacket first.

Though the moment is sweet, the parallels mostly end there. Their chemistry hints at more meaning behind their words, but the steamy hot tub scene proves to be just a moment between friends as Min Ho does what he spent most of this season doing: Downplaying his feelings for Kitty.

“Don’t be too hard on yourself. It’s impossible to keep emotions like that hidden, take it from me,” he tells her. “The good news is once I admitted how I felt about you, I could move on. And so will you.”

There are several moments this season where Min Ho is inadvertently emulating all of the things Peter did when he was secretly harboring feelings for Lara Jean in the original movies, hinting heavily at the fact that Min Ho and Kitty may be endgame after all. They even recreate the scene where Lara Jean faints on the track!

The hot tub moment between Peter and Lara Jean is one of the most iconic scenes from the films. It’s Lara Jean, the hopeless romantic, finally putting her heart on her sleeve for the very first time. Min Ho doing the same for Kitty is a meaningful step forward for their relationship, and says a lot about his character development.

XO, Kitty has managed to achieve a great feat as a spin-off series to an iconic film. With Cathcart and her co-stars, the series stands strongly on its own as a comedic and dreamy K-drama that offers Kitty a path of her own to follow. But these little moments show it’s not losing sight of where it came from.
