While co-parenting can present a myriad of challenges, some parents have managed to find a way to communicate effectively and put the child’s well-being above all else. Idina Menzel and ex-husband, Taye Diggs have mastered the art of co-parenting and have done so seamlessly for over ten years. In a candid, exclusive conversation on Today, Menzel opened up about her co-parenting journey with ex-husband.

“I have to say that I’m very proud of that,” Menzel told the hosts in her interview, regarding the fact that she and Diggs have successfully co-parented together for over a decade.

“We really don’t believe in putting a child in the middle of anything and forcing them to have to choose in any way, and we never speak poorly of the other. I’m really proud of us for putting him first.”

As she continued her interview, the singer/actress also touched on the fact that she has had to think “long and hard” before agreeing to allow her 15-year-old son, Walker Diggs, to accompany her in public on the red carpet.

“I never let him ever go on the red carpet with me,” Menzel explained.

“He’s gotten to the age where he says, ‘I’m proud of you, Mom. I want to be with you.’ So then I felt like it was OK.”

She continued, “I believe his anonymity is so important and yet he’s a teenager, and it was a hard decision to be honest, you know? But he really wanted to. I’m proud of him, so I loved showing him off. But as a parent, I’m still conflicted about it.”

The 53-year-old said that her son is unquestionably, her “guy” and “He’s the best thing ever happened to me, really.”

Menzel mentioned that her teenager is homeschooling so that he can travel in between California and New York so that he can spend equal time with both parents.

“I can’t be away from him for more than a couple weeks. I’m too controlling,” Menzel laughed at her admission.

We cannot wait for Menzel to share more special public moments with she and her son.
