I’m A Celebrity star Kadeena Cox has posed a new video from her wheelchair as she revealed she has used one since her multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis in 2014.

The Paralympic athlete, 34, who received the news of her diagnosis after previously suffering a stroke, shared the health update with her Instagram followers on Monday.

Kadeena appeared on the ITV show in 2021 and shared at the time that she needed help going to the toilet as she struggled with her condition in camp.

In the video, Kadeena took on a viral trend where she pretended to cry before pulling a playful facial expression, and said: ‘Getting told you have multiple sclerosis and you have to use a wheelchair at 23.’

Showcasing her positive attitude towards the situation, she captioned it: ‘ When life gives you lemons. Living my best wheelchair baddie life.’

Many sent their support to Kadeena after she opened up about living with MS on her social media platform.

One person who said they had been diagnosed in their fifties, shared: ‘It was bad enough for me in my early 50’s becoming a Wheelie.

‘I couldn’t imagine it happening at your age. You look like you’re handling it so well, I know we all behave differently behind closed doors, keep going girl, you’re slaying it’.

Others said: ‘Sending you love. I have two friends dealing with MS’ and ‘Hugs I first found out at age 24. I am the same as you but you won gold at pars, be proud whoever you are’.

Kadeena has previously revealed she was accused of ‘faking’ her disability.

She is a four-time Paralympic champion, having struck gold in athletics and cycling in 2016, before winning two more cycling events at the delayed Tokyo Games five years later.

But despite her success for Team GB, she revealed the negative reactions she has received from some people who do not acknowledge her disability.

MS affects the brain and nerves, but Kadeena is still able to post joyful videos on social media of herself dancing to music.

She believes she is treated differently from other disabled people due to her less visible condition.

‘As someone living with MS, I get people saying I shouldn’t be parking in a blue badge spot,” said Kadeena, as quoted by the BBC.

‘I get people who don’t want to give up the priority seat on the train or the bus for me. I get people on social media saying “that Kadeena Cox can’t be disabled, I don’t believe it” or people saying you are faking it and taking money from the DWP (Department for Work and Pensions).

‘It’s people and their ignorant or uneducated selves making comments and passing judgement.’

Kadeena has vowed to continue raising awareness for people in a similar position to her, but admits her mental health has been affected by the hurtful comments she has received.

‘I struggle with an eating disorder that I’ve openly spoke about so that’s one challenge,’ she added. ‘It really makes you question your life sometimes.

‘Now I’ve got this disability, my mental health is struggling because people are commenting on my disability and you just feel like you’re fighting a losing battle.

WHAT IS MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS?

Multiple sclerosis (known as MS) is a condition in which the immune system attacks the body and causes nerve damage to the brain and spinal cord.

It is an incurable, lifelong condition. Symptoms can be mild in some, and in others more extreme causing severe disability.

MS affects 2.3 million people worldwide – including around one million in the US, and 100,000 in the UK.

It is more than twice as common in women as it is in men. A person is usually diagnosed in their 20s and 30s.

The condition is more commonly diagnosed in people of European ancestry.

The cause isn’t clear. There may be genes associated with it, but it is not directly hereditary. Smoking and low vitamin D levels are also linked to MS.

Symptoms include fatigue, difficulty walking, vision problems, bladder problems, numbness or tingling, muscle stiffness and spasms, problems with balance and co-ordination, and problems with thinking, learning and planning.

The majority of sufferers will have episodes of symptoms which go away and come back, while some have ones which get gradually worse over time.

Symptoms can be managed with medication and therapy.

The condition shortens the average life expectancy by around five to 10 years.

‘There are some days when I’m just like “What am I fighting for?” But the reality is I’m fighting for all those people that are in this position and feel like there’s nothing to fight for.’

Shortly after her time in the I’m A Celebrity jungle, Kadeena said her multiple sclerosis was so bad during her time on the show that she needed help getting to the toilet.

Kadeena suffers from fatigue, spasms and slurred speech, experiencing these symptoms while staying in Gwrych Castle in Wales for the show.

After the experience, she said: ‘I thought my MS would be nice to me.

‘Turns out MS is never nice to you, so I really struggled with the fatigue and my spasms were being quite a problem, and there was points where my speech was really slurred and everyone was really worried about me.

‘There was times when literally the campmates had to help me get into bed, they had to help me get to the toilet, and it was a real struggle.’

However, Kadeena insisted she never felt like quitting the show, saying she and her campmates ‘laughed’ their way through her difficulties.
