Get your wooden stakes ready, slayers. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is getting a reboot!

Variety reports that the teen fantasy series is nearing a pilot order over at Hulu.

The iconic series aired on The WB from 1997 to 2003, and was inspired by Joss Whedon‘s 1992 film starring Kristy Swanson. Sarah Michelle Gellar starred as teenage vampire slayer Buffy Summers, who is tasked with fighting the forces of evil that plague Sunnydale High with her mentor Giles and her ragtag group of friends.

The series seems to be headed in a different direction than the original, however. A new creative team — which, noticeably, does not include Whedon, who was accused of years of misogyny in a bombshell 2022 New York Magazine piece — is attached to the series. Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D) will write, showrun, and executive produce. Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao (Eternals) is set to direct the pilot and executive produce. Dolly Parton, who produced the original series, will also return.

Deadline also reports that the writers room is expected to begin soon, which could be a good sign that the show is getting a series order.

This is not the first time Hulu has revived a beloved teen series. The streamer also brought back Veronica Mars, though the reboot brought the show to a very controversial conclusion, according to fans.

Now that we know the beloved series is getting a reboot, many fans may be wondering: Is the Scooby gang getting back together? Here’s what we know so far.

Who will return to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot from the original cast?

Variety reports Gellar is in final talks to reprise her iconic role. But it appears Gellar will only appear in a recurring capacity rather than helm the series. The series will reportedly feature a new slayer, which sounds like Buffy will be offering some much-needed mentorship to the new young hero. She will also serve as an executive producer on the series.

Members of the original cast (which included Alyson Hannigan, Nicholas Brendon, James Marsters, Anthony Head, David Boreanaz, Charisma Carpenter and Seth Green) have not yet publicly addressed the news.

For now, it remains unclear if the rest of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer cast plans on signing on for the reboot. But Deadline notes the possibility “is considered likely.”
