The spotlight has now turned to Karen Derrico, who was recently apprehended on charges of making threats against her ex-husband, his partner, and their children. This revelation prompts a look back at the origins of her relationship and the unraveling of it.
Karen and Deon Derrico, whose marriage was well underway when audiences were introduced to them, began their story long before TLC came into the picture. Their first meeting took place in 2002 in the vibrant city of Detroit, amidst a night out with separate groups of friends. A connection was sparked, leading them to start dating, and they eventually solidified their bond with marriage in 2005.
How did Karen and Deon Derrico meet?
Karen and Deon Derrico were already deep into their marriage when fans met them, but years before TLC came calling, they were just two singles hanging out at a club. They have said they met in Detroit in 2002 while out with separate friend groups. They hit it off and began dating, ultimately marrying in 2005.
Together, the pair welcomed 14 children, including multiple sets of multiples. Their first child, Darian, was born in 2005, followed by Derrick in 2010. In 2011, they welcomed their first set of twins, boys named Denver and Dallas. In 2013, quintuplets joined the family, followed by two sets of triplets in 2017 and 2019. A year after their youngest set of triplets was born, they signed on for Doubling Down with the Derricos, a reality TV show that followed the family through life.
Why did the duo divorce?
While TLC initially portrayed the Derricos as a wholesome, more down-to-earth alternative to some of the more troubled families it had featured previously, the cracks began to show within the first few seasons of the series. Fans noted pointed comments and some passive-aggressive swipes relatively early on in the show’s run.
The tension eventually bubbled over, and the pair announced their plans to divorce in 2024. Around the same time, TLC pulled the plug on the series. Initially, the Derricos insisted that they would be moving forward amicably, with a focus on their children and their happiness. But what first read as a mutual decision to separate has since spiraled into considerable drama.
What is going on now?
Karen and Deon Derrico’s split was fairly quiet until recently, when it spiraled out of control rapidly. The first sign of trouble came when Deon filed for a restraining order against his ex-wife, alleging that she was threatening his children and harassing him in various ways. According to court filings, the drama stemmed from Karen’s desire to get back together and Deon’s resistance to it.
Things turned even more serious in recent days, with Karen’s arrest. The arrest, and the subsequent charges, all stem from allegations made by Deon. According to court records, Karen was arrested June 17 in Nevada. Court documents obtained by TMZ allege she was charged with harassment, violating a restraining order, preventing a witness from testifying through threat of violence, and aggravated stalking.
The report goes on to accuse Karen of sending emails threatening the lives of her children, Deon, and his current girlfriend, who remains unnamed. She was arraigned in June 2026, pleaded not guilty, and was released on a $2,000 bond with an ankle monitor. Karen has since spoken out, via her attorney, who claims the threats and emails were “fabricated” by Deon. Karen is due back in court on August 6.
