Prince William and Kate Middleton leave after attending the annual celebrations for Commonwealth Day at Westminster Abbey

Find out what a lip-reading expert says the Prince and Princess of Wales were talking and laughing about after taking their seats at event.

This year’s Commonwealth Day was extra special for members of the royal family. That’s because King Charles and the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton) were in attendance. Last year, both senior royals had to skip the festivities as they were going through trying times battling cancer.

In 2024, the king delivered a pre-recorded video message while undergoing treatment. The monarch has since returned to his royal duties as he continues his treatment and Kate announced in January that she is in remission. So with the monarch and his daughter-in-law on hand at this year’s service, all eyes were on them.

Here’s what a lip-reading expert caught Kate and Prince William talking about and what King Charles said when his eldest son arrived.

Upon arriving for the service on March 10, 2025, the Prince and Princess of Wales were greeted by Dr. David Hoyle, Dean of the Abbey. William wore a dark blue suit and a burgundy checked tie, while his wife donned a striking red coat dress by Catherine Walker with a matching Gina Foster hat and heels.

We’ve seen Kate in this same ensemble before. She first wore it in December 2021 at her Together at Christmas carol concert and again in November 2023 to welcome South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol and First Lady Kim Keon Hee for their official state visit.

“I think she is trying a more sustainable way of dressing,” The Telegraph’s fashion editor told People. “She already has a vast and extensive wardrobe, so why shouldn’t she be looking for ways to take existing pieces and re-imagine them?”

Once inside the Abbey, William and Kate were seen talking amongst themselves and a professional lip reader analyzed the clip of what they said to each other.

Lip-reading expert Jeremy Freeman shared with Tyla that Kate turned her head telling the person to the left of her “thanks,” before turning to William and commenting that the celebrations were “so lovely.” According to Freeman, William smiled and replied: “Not bad, right?”

King Charles also opted for a suit and tie, while Queen Camilla chose a pink wool and satin coat dress by Fiona Clare and a matching Philip Treacy hat for the occasion.

Freeman observed what the monarch said to his son when he arrived.

The expert noted that the king wasn’t particularly chatty and just exchanged the four-word pleasantry “Good to see you” as they greeted one another inside the Abbey before everyone took their places and the National Anthem played.

A total of 2,000 guests from all over the Commonwealth filled the Abbey as performers from across the Commonwealth took part in the service that featured hymns, poetry, and prayers. The theme of the service was “Together We Thrive.”
