Prime Video’s newest drama draws straight from one of the most enduring books in history. 

House of David is an epic retelling of the biblical story of David. The show follows King Saul (Ali Suliman) as his pride causes him to lose power over his kingdom. Meanwhile, God annoints David (Michael Iskander), an outcast teenager, as the new king. David finds himself on a journey to fulfill his destiny as he navigates love, loss, and violence in the court of the man he’s destined to replace.  

Will ‘House of David’ get a season 2? 

The first three episodes of House of David premiered Feb. 27 on Prime Video. New episodes release weekly on Thursdays through April 3. 

While Amazon hasn’t revealed descriptions for upcoming episodes, episode titles suggest that the first season will end with David’s legendary battle with Goliath (Martyn Ford). That leaves plenty of potential for a second season, as David’s story continues beyond that event. 

House of David creator Jon Erwin said he’s excited about the direction the series could take if Amazon does renew it for another season. 

“I like something that can grow and evolve into something different,” he said in an interview with Thoughts and Spoilers (via YouTube), referencing HBO’s mega-hit Game of Thrones. “We’re definitely in that first chapter of David’s life. We’re in the coming of age, hero’s journey … then as David grows up, the story really does change, its tone, its texture. And I think I would really look forward to being able to explore that part of his life as well.”

‘House of David’ creator says potential audience is ‘enormous’ 

Amazon hasn’t shared how many people have watched House of David since it premiered. But it did land in the No. 2 spot on Prime Video’s top 10 shortly after its release. That bodes well for its chances at a season 2. 

The show’s creator is confident there are plenty of people who will be interested in the gritty religious drama. 

“The sheer size of the audience is enormous,” Erwin, who also directed the 2023 movie Jesus Revolution, told The New York Times. “It is the largest underserved niche audience in the world.”

But if that audience wants to see more of David’s story, they’ll need to tune in. For Amazon, a show like House of David is all about getting more people to commit to its streaming service, Diane Winston, a professor at the University of Southern California who studies religion in media, to the Times.  

“Streaming services are companies that need to make money, and what drives them is getting more eyeballs,” she explained. “If they think faith-based content is going to get that for them, they will invest in it.”

House of David is streaming on Prime Video.
