Has Discovery Channel quietly canceled Alaskan Bush People? New episodes of the reality show about an off-the-grid family haven’t aired since December 2022, leaving fans to wonder about the show’s fate. Now, a new report hints that the show will not return for a 15th season.
‘Alaskan Bush People’ reportedly canceled amid legal battle
Alaskan Bush People followed the adventures of Billy Brown, his wife Ami Brown, and their children as they eked out a living in the wilderness. It aired on Discovery from 2014 to 2022.
Billy Brown died suddenly in February 2021. According to a new report from the U.S. Sun, a $500,000 lawsuit filed after his death might be to blame for the show’s extended hiatus and possible cancellation.
Billy’s business partner, Robert Maughon, filed a breach of contract lawsuit against the late Alaskan Bush People star’s estate and business, Alaskan Wilderness Family Productions, in April 2021. In April 2024, Ami testified in the case, “acknowledging that the show Alaskan Bush People ultimately had 14 seasons, with the last season being filmed in 2022,” according to court documents obtained by The Sun. Throughout the filing, the show is referred to in the past tense, indicating that it has been canceled.
At one point, the filing refers to “breaches” that “occurred despite the significant profits generated by [Alaskan Wilderness Family Productions], particularly through the television series Alaskan Bush People which was featured on the Discovery Channel network.”
Discovery has not commented on the status of Alaskan Bush People. The show is still mentioned on the network’s website, though there have not been any new updates since 2022. However, it is not included in the list of current properties on the Discovery press site.
In April 2024, Billy and Ami’s son Bear Brown shared a cryptic update on the show’s future on Instagram.
“Over the past year I have been asked, if there will be a new season of Alaskan Bush People, while I can’t answer that question at this time, I am excited to announce, Alaskan Bush People Behind The Scenes, with Bear Brown,” he wrote. “It’s starting with the first season, I will be talking about both things in front of the camera, and behind it! The first episode is dropping summer 2024.”
Recently, Ami Brown has been struggling with health issues. She was rushed to the hospital in February 2025 after suffering chest pains, Bear shared on social media, where she was eventually diagnosed with pneumonia. She was released about two weeks later and is apparently on the mend. Ami previously battled lung cancer in 2017.
Past episodes of Alaskan Bush People are streaming on Max, Hulu, discovery+, and Netflix.
